If anyone on the forum owns one of these, how would you review/rate it? Thanks

I have one, love it. Very easy to use. Recorded song I wrote, "Don't Let Anything Stand In Your Way", on it. Can hear it at http://www.betarecords.com/mickey.lawson

Dennis, I have the DP-01, basically the same thing without the onboard effects.

I thought the effects would be worthless to me because they modify the track, they record real time as I understand it. I just needed something portable for tracking, then copy the tracks to PC for mixing, etc.

I get great sounding tracks from it. Also really like the monitoring and smooth footswitch punch in ability. You can set the level of playback plus monitoring any way you like with ease. I need to hear what I'm playing at the right level to the mix, and with this I can much easier and better than pc. Mono tracks play out of both sides in headphones, something my sound card does not do. The punch in is very smooth and you can't tell where it was punched. Very nice feature. The foot switch is not included, I think any single button switch would work. I got the one they sell as an accessory.

The tracks sound better than if tracked on my PC with an Maudio 24/96k bit sound card. I think you'll be very pleased with the quality of the sound.

I think the FX model has XLR inputs which mine does not have, and that alone would justify the price difference, although I have a mic preamp that works fine for my needs.

Importing and exporting tracks seems slow. Works fine, just slow.

One other trick I might mention, to import a stereo mix, like backing tracks or something, you have the split the stereo track into left and right mono tracks first, then import them to separate tracks in the Tascam. It will not import a stereo track.

I had the FX about a year ago and it's a great machine. The onboard stereo reverbs sound excellent, in my opinion. It has (2)1/4" inputs and (2)XLR's, a USB out for dumping tracks onto your computer. The controls are very user friendly. The mixer section has traditional sliders and knobs for EQ and pan.

If I were buying one now, I would get the DP-01FXCD... with built-in CD+RW burner/CD-ROM. I think it burns both audio and data files. Much easier than transferring your mixes to your computer via the USB port. That requires going through a few additional steps, as I recall.

Thanks for all of the input.
Is it possible to record your steel track dry and add your rack gear effects to your steel track during mixing? If not, are there seperate outputs on each track to make it possible to patch the track output into your effects rack and then patch into another empty track to gain the same end results?
Thanks

Yes. And you can assign that same effect in varying amounts to different tracks, for example add your favorite stereo reverb to your steel track at mixdown, and apply a lesser amount of that to a rhythm guitar, drums, etc.

Dennis, I'm not sure exactly how that works, but I know it has an effects send and return.

You can download the users manual if you want, it would probably answer your question.

Thanks again,
It seems like the new DP-01/FX/CD is a best buy. I was also considering the new Fostex Mr-8/CD. Sounds like the Tascam has the edge.
