Hi folks!
This summer I attended a concert with a group of musicians who play their very own versions of Afro-American spirituals. They were very good, and the concert was very moving.

One of the guitarists also played lap steel. I approached him after the concert and asked him what tuning he used. He said he tuned
lo to hi: Bb, D, F, Bb, C, F.

He also said that he sometimes detuned the 3rd string a halfstep to get a major triad on top, or a wholestep for a minor triad.

What would this tuning be called? What do you think about it? Any good?

Cheers,
Øystein

Are you sure the tuning is listed going from high to low? That's quite a stretch from a high Bb down to a D etc…

I'm sure you meant low to high and in that case it's a Bb major (add 9) or Bb maj (add 2) tuning.
It's a little like a Slack Key tuning, the F Wahine tunign for guitar that's (low to high) C F C G C E. If F is the root you get that 1, 5, 2, 5, 7 sound. Very pretty.

[tab]
Bb, D, F, Bb, C, F

I III V I 9 V

#V I mIII #V bVII mIII

IV VI I IV V I

bVII 9 IV bVII I IV

Or with 3rd string lower

Bb, D, "E", Bb, C, F

I III bV I 9 V

#V I II #V bVII mIII

bV VI I bV bVI b9

bVII 9 III bVII I IV

Or other 3rd string -1/2

Bb, D, F, "A", C, F

b9 IV #V I bIII #V

#V I mIII IV bVII mIII

IV VI I III V I

bVII 9 IV VI I IV

It's late, but that's how I see the possibilities.

It is useful if it allows you to
play a song the way you want to.

Thanks to everybody for helping me out, and for pointing out my typos... I really appreciate it!

The band I saw this summer has now released a record, and after listening to it I've found that the tuning is very nice!

Thanks again for all your help!
