This Saturday I will be playing my uni with Bayard Lancaster and The Philadelphia Blues Messengers at the annual free West Oak Lane Jazz Festival (westoaklanefestival.com). We play one set starting at 7:30 on Stage 4 at Ogontz and Walnut Lane. In addition to Bayard on sax and flute, we will also have Lisa Chavous as a guest - she's a dynamite R&B singer. Also, Lucky Oceans is still in town, and may play lap steel with us if his personal situation permits.
This festival gets better every year. Some of the acts this year are War, Ohio Players, Pat Martino, Kevin Mahogany, Edgardo Cintron, Odean Pope, and other regional and national jazz groups. We will be followed on the same stage by the Sun Ra Archestra. They are mostly Sun Ra's original Archestra members and are keeping his legend alive. If you are in the area and you like jazz, don't miss this huge free event. |

So much good music, so little time, and no transporter beam!
DelMarVa Chicken Festival, Doug Jernigan in Newark Del and Dave Doggett in Philly. I have the night off .. How can I be in 3 places at once?

Well, it was an incredible set. Lucky Oceans did show up with his Alkire E Harp 10-string lap steel (that's all he's traveling with in his trip home to visit family here - he lives in Australia now). I loaned him my backup Hilton volume pedal, and he used the Twin provided on stage. He sat down next to me at the front left of the stage, and we had twin steels, lap and pedal, for a set that was mostly Chicago blues and R&B. I was a little worried the crowd might be small, because our stage was the farthest of the four stages from the center of the festival. But there was a huge crowd, 90% black, all ages, and many from the surrounding middle-class black neighborhood. We were the only blues band at this jazz festival, and I guess a lot of people wanted to hear some blues. I'm sure few had ever seen steel guitars play blues. It was a very interesting experience.
Out of deference to Lucky, he was usually given the first lead, and I had to try to follow that. After his first lead I just thought, "Aw s**t, I have to follow that?!" Lucky has some of the fastest steel licks I have ever heard, lap or pedal. At one point he actually stood up, and somehow held his lap steel on his knees and ripped off one incredible riff after another. He ended up at the edge of the stage on his knees flailing away like nothing I have ever heard. The crowd loved it. They were out of their folding chairs and dancing down front. Of course, Lisa Chavous, our guest R&B singer had alot to do with that too. It was one of the most memorable sets I have ever played in.
The sad part is, in the rush to get set up, I forgot to take my recorder out my van, so I didn't get a recording. That is something I will always regret. |
