I've led bands on both guitar and steel. But I found it harder on steel because I was not fundamentally a rhythm instrument - that particular band needed somebody to rein them in rhythmically. Lately, I've been working almost completely as a sideman. The level of satisfaction depends largely on how well someone else runs it.
Actually - in some ways, I think it's less wear and tear to run the show than dance to someone else's tune. If I'm running the show, I book the gigs right off the bat to fit into my schedule, have a strong hand in focusing the band direction, and never run into the problem where the steel gets buried in the mix. That is, of course, offset against the responsibility of doing all that stuff. Ya' pays your money, and takes your choice.

Richard, as usual you and I are on the same page. My first duty as "Band Leader" was to hire a new bass player. My second duty was appoint him "BAND LEADER"!Richard Bass wrote:In Faron Youngs band the new guy always became the band leader.
Richard
That was a close call!

Kayton with Hank Snow
If memoey serves me right, Kayton Roberts was the band leader for Hank Snow for many years after Chubby Wise left the group.
