Coincidentally, I stumbled across this tune from a link elsewhere on the forum earlier today. It listed the steel player. And yes, he is a genius.

What's even more amazing is that the steel player, although an accomplished C6 player, had only been playing E9 for 2 or 3 weeks prior to making the recording.

John, don't worry about that. I did live in Tyler abd wish I still did but the kids thought we should be closer to them at 75 years (and they are right)
You probably associated me with Tyler because of my serving the East Texas Steel Guitar Association in Tyler.

Well, I have had many guess who this player is and some that knew. It is time to tell all that it is Curly Chalker.
I'm glad I didn't have to guess. Man, what style and touch. Great player but first I ever heard of him playing E9th.

| I couldn't tell by the first part, but the last half sure sounded like Curly. I remember when I bought his Nevada Breaks cassette several years ago, he said he was tired of every one thinking he could only play jazz so he spent a lot of time on the E9 neck. What an awesome player, wish he had lived forever. |

Mike, what recording? I do know Curly was playing great E9th in the early '60s, even before his BHOBS album was released (1966). I saw him on the Jimmy Dean show in 1964, and he was playing E9th behind Red Stewart (I still have a tape of that show). His "Nashville Sundown" album with all E9th songs came around a decade later. |
