would it help me to get a cheap 6-8 string lap steel that i can take along just to pratice with when i am away from my pedal steel or are they to diffent? meaning things like string spacing and so forth ?

Calvin, I don't see where it could hurt anything. On the contrary, Just practicing tunes, chords, or scales or whatever would be better than no practice at all. I usually take my little Fender Champion and Roland Micro Cube with me on trips.

Buy your lap steel. Start playing it more and more. The more this happens, the more the possibility that you will have an enlightening experience.

Good idea, but if you have a choice of lap steels, you might try to get one that has string spacing similar to your pedal steel. Often the lap steels have wider string spacing that might confuse your hand a bit. But even so, it would be very worthwhile.
