I'm surprised Ray Stevens hasn't been mentioned yet. He did a bunch of 'em. The first one that comes to my mind is the 'Haircut Song'.

The grand daddy of them all, "Pretty Polly."

"Long Black Veil"

There are a bunch of rockabilly and neorockabilly dark songs. One is "Juvenile Delinquent," where the guy shoots his father.

Kind of creepy, but in a 'fun' way: Dire Wolf by the Grateful Dead.

Creepy and wrathful: Caleb Meyer by Gillian Welch

Lotta good ones mentioned. I'd like to add a Johnny Paycheck song "Cave". A dream of being a young boy again and heading to the woods above the small home town only to discover a cave. Then venturing in but becoming hopelessly lost. Eventually a terrible rumble, perhaps an earthquake, the ground cracks and there is light. The boy climbs out of the cave to freedom only to find nuclear annihilation.

Some very effective steel work to add to the mood.

Yeah, a little tasteful steel goes real well with nuclear annihiliation, I always say...

I've always thought the song, "Ben" was a little creepy, tho it had a nice melody. It's a boy singing to his rat.

"Ben, the two of us need look no more.
We've both found what we were looking for.
With my friend to call my own, I'll never be alone.
And you my friend will see, you've got a friend in me."

Sung in 1972 by Michael Jackson for the movie "Willard"

"Michael Jackson" is all you need to read for it to be creepy.

Am I the only one who thinks "Farewell Party" is kind of creepy? Some guy who wants to stay with someone who doesn't want to be with him until he dies, at which point he wants her to pretend that she actually loved him, even though she''ll actually be having fun at his funeral because she's glad he's gone? I love the song, but that's pretty creepy.

"Bringing Mary Home" (already mentioned) and Red Sovine's "Phantom 309" (about a hitch-hiker that gets picked by a long-dead big-rig driver) are my favorites. Both would make excellent "Twilight Zone" episodes.

Edited to add: David Allen Coe's "The Ride", about a hiker that gets picked up by the ghost of Hank Sr., is kinda creepy too!

"i just want to meet the man"

Post by Pat Irvin »

robbie fulks - "I just want to meet the man"

about a guy stalking his ex-wife, his daughter and his wifes new boyfriend

while trying to get into the house the lyric says "no, that's nothing in my pocket, just a toy i brought for jane - i couldn't stand to see her hurting, now daddies here to kill the pain"

stalking and killing his family - if that don't creep you out i don't know what will

The latest one I can think of is Private Malone by David Ball. Just typing it gave me chicken skin.

Looks like Paycheck may have the monopoly on creepy songs. How about "He thought He Would Die Laughing, and He Did"?

Teddy Bear by Red Sovine.

"I took my turn at riding Teddy Bear."
At least Hank Hill cleaned it up, grammatically.

"Walls of Time", by Bill Monroe & Peter Rowan.

The wind is blowing cross the mountains
And out on the valley way below.
It sweeps the grave of my darling
When I die that's where I want to go.

Lord send the angels for my darling
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth love
And come to you when I die.

Our names are carved upon the tombstone
I promised you before you died
Our love will bloom forever darling
When we rest side by side.

I hear a voice out in the darkness
It moans and whispers through the pines
I know it's my sweetheart a calling
I hear her through the walls of time

Has anyone mentioned "He Stopped Loving Her Today"?

I know it's a classic, but it always creeped me out.

How about Dicky Lee's "Strange things happen", or Patches. Lots of teen "angst" songs like "Teen Angel",
or "Where oh where can my baby be".

Trump card:
Roy Acuff's "Wreck on the Highway"
"There was whisky and blood all together"
"Mixed with the glass where they lay"

I hear it wil be Kenny Chesney's next record, set to an island beat.
