I hope I'm not the first to have written on this subject, but I feel a need to share with other steel guitarists my enthusiasm for Lucky Oceans' wonderful new album, "Secret Steel". Lucky is one of those rare musicians who can play any style of music and play it convincingly -- with heart and with respect for its traditions and unspoken rules.
In this recording you hear echoes of jazz, blues, Guinean, Cajun, folk, country -- beautiful. And what's so nice about this album is that he seems to effortlessly embody the genres he's playing. When he plays a blues tune I'm instantly transported to some smokey old bar back in the sixties -- the ones where you walked in and you could smell the beer spilt on the carpet. Maybe a big mirror behid the bar and a few people dancing. The Cajun tunes -- all of the sudden you're in Lafayette or Crowley, Louisiana on a warm humid summer night, dancing, talking, laughing, eating boiled crawfish (but maybe not sucking the brains), corn and potatoes. Lucky has travelled and lived all over the world -- musically as well as physically, and this album attests. This is really nice music and I think any steel guitarist would enjoy it.
My humble opinion,
-- Susan

That cut is very nice. With Susan's description of other cuts, I think I'm going to have to get this album. I've been an admirer of Lucky's work from the AATW days, especially the Lucky Steels the Wheel album. |

I really dig Lucky's playing with Asleep at the Wheel - always inventive and unexpected, always tasteful, whatever the style.
Where can one buy this new album? |

Thanks for the tune link. Mighty pretty stuff.
I can picture Cajun country as you describe it, Susan. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

I agree! This is a great recording.
Lucky can jump from one style to the next with great ease.
It is one of my favourite CDs!

Dear Susan,
Thank you very much for your kind words about my CD, 'Secret Steel'. It means a lot to me, coming from you, a player of great originality and feeling. Thanks also to John, Bob, Per and Howard, also such fine musicians. The CD should shortly be available in some record stores as well as online through the Forum and CD Baby.
I should check the forum more often!
all the best,

Lucky gave me a copy when he played with us recently. It is a great eclectic mix of interesting songs, all done very well. It is the kind of steel with a different twist that I like to listen to. |

I love the way the band interacts on this recording. All the guys have their own voice and listening to the rant is a joy.I guess it does address a few genres but at no time does it sound like parody, everything is well understood. If I may get ethereal,This record is like a snowball tumbling down a mountain, growing and picking up dirt, sticks, twigs and filth as it barrels through campsites and villages sometimes teetering on the edge of a cliff, sometimes falling, finally resting at the foot..and melting away. Back into the.....Oceans(sorry).
Cheers,Shane. |

Hey Theresa,
Good to hear from you - hope you're doing well. The entire CD was recorded on my old Franklin 008, by the way. St. Louis....hmmm... wasn't planning on it, but one of these years... |

Lucky,
I didn't realize your Franklin was 008! We're not that old are we? I'm glad it still works for you. I'll be putting in an order for your new CD.
Thanks,
