Lately I have been diggin in to Ben Webster. That Duke sound and the Kansas City feel are so sweet! I picked up a 3lp on 2 cd set called the "Soul of Ben Webster". Two Lps arent even Webster albums but he's on them. Great stuff with some cool guitarists. |

Hi Tom - Ben Webster is great! In the quartet album he did with Art Tatum, Tatum plays his usual mind-boggling arpeggios and non-stop filigre' runs but Webster just plays simply and beautifuly with that one-of-a-kind breathy tone and makes all that moot. Tatum was a better match for Buddy DeFranco whose clarinet approach is a lot like Tatum's.

I also love Ben "The Brute" Webster. Even his last recordings in Europe still have his trademark sound. His version of Danny Boy is wonderful. The stuff he recorded with Johnny Hodges are some of my favorites.

Andy, thanks for mentioning the Tatum/Webster pairing... I thought exactly the same thing.
Most of the horn players who performed in this series with Tatum felt a need to match Tatum in his florid approach, but Ben Webster just went in there and blew exactly the way Ben Webster always blew, and the results are beautiful.
