I am thinking about buying 2 Lansing 15 inch D140 speakers, and putting them in separate cabnets.
The price is $118.00 each, no shipping. If my memory serves me correct, I used to love the sound of these things. Should I take the time and money to re-live the past, or stick with modern speakers? |

I've got a D140 in a Twin Reverb, and it sounds awesome, for steel or six-string. |

I found some old JBL's and gave 75.00
each for them. Had them reconed and
I think they are great but I don't
push them.

D140 and K140 Lansings are bass speakers. If they are original, you will not be getting the top end you might want. I would listen to them first before putting that money down.
I would suggest 130s instead. |

I agree with Bill on this one. I put a D140 in a Session 500 and it definately lost some high end which made it darker sounding. |

I tried a pair of D-140's, original cone. High end suffered and the low end got a little muddy. I went back to 130's and got happy again. But now I just use original cone Altec 418B's, and am happier yet. All the above was with my '71 Twin Reverb. YMMV |

OK.
I could not find the specs on the D140 online, but I did find the K140 which would not be too far off as the speaker is one of the last JBL drivers to use the magnet structure and cast frame similar to the D series.
K140 frequency range 40-2500Hz.
K130 frequency range 50-6000Hz.
The "top end" would be the highest frequencies the speaker can reproduce. As you see there is a HUGE difference in the top end of the K130. The D140/K140 speaker is a bass speaker meant to be used in crossed over cabs with other drivers providing the "top end".
Hope this explains why you would never get the upper frequencies from these JBL 140 models. It is not there. If you have a 140 speaker in a cab and you have all the treble/top end you need, then either the speaker has been reconed with a 130 cone or your hearing is shot or you just don't like a lot of top end. |

I'll go with B) and/or C), the cone was original... |
