I may be mistaken, but that aluminium bridge looks exactly like the one found on many Oahu acoustic student lap steels from the 1930s. And I seem to remember seeing that weird pickup in a 30s or 40s Oahu catalog.

Yes, 1930's for sure. Probably built in Chicago by Kay, Harmony, or some such manufacturer and branded Volu-Tone. I'm guessing it's pre-Valco. I wonder what that pickup sounds like?

There was a Volutone on ebait a while back, and it had a strange receptacle for the cord. Appeared to be a two or three pin (?) connection Confused

That Vox Humana guitar is just like one I found in a dumpster when I was a kid. I gaved it to a friend- couldn't figure out why they didn't shape the neck and the action was too high for chords- but have fond memories of the look and style. I'd buy one now if I could find it, just for the look!
