Hank Garland Movie Update

Post by Bunky Markert »

Here's a link to the Hank Garland movie website, which now includes a trailer of the film. Looks pretty lame and over-dramatized, but at least the guitars look great.

This topic has been discussed for a while so once again I will say that the legacy of Hank Garland would have been so much better served if all the cash they used to make a soap opera about him was used to make a factual documentary on him.

Even the title is stupid. The man was not "Crazy". That is a Patsy Cline hook. Why would they want to hang that on Garland or anything associated with him??

When I read about the conspiracy ("country only" mafia plots to kill Garland because he is playing too much jazz) theories and bullet holes supposedly in the car and his wife's antics and the fact that they were not even using his own playing in the film, that someone else actually recorded the soundtrack.....just worthless as far as I am concerned. Who could have ever come up with this mess and why??

Save your money. Buy his CDs. Marvel at his playing.

I agree totally, and when you understand how the system seems to work, it is a wonder movies of any substance are made at all. I'm sure the story of Hank Garland's career is worth telling, but if it must be placed in a dramatic context with a love interest, and car chases and fight scenes to make it compelling, then it's over, no matter how well you dress it up.

There are so many other musician's stories that will probably never be told - Pat Martino, Lenny Breau, Jaco, Danny Gatton, that are probably as worthy. Too bad. All we can hope is that this film spawns a better one.
