What's under the MOTS?

Hi all -

Hoping to attach some legs to a basic old Magnatone MOTS lapsteel, and wondering about flush mounting or surface mounting ... I realize I don't know what's under the MOTS. Is it balsa? Masonite?

Why dont you just use a keyboard stand and get a couple of pine wood planks and cover them with black amp cover material with a couple of clips on each side of the plank to keep the steel in place. That way you can have two steels on the stand. Cheap, sturdy and works great.

Since I tour around, and am on and off airplanes all the time, weight and size are prime considerations. Everything's gotta fit in my suitcase and the suitcase - clothes, lapsteel, stand and all - has to come in under 50lbs. My second bag allotment is already eaten up with a pedalboard case.

The guitar weighs next to nothing, and it seems the most efficient solution all around is just to attach some flanges to it and get some lightweight legs. But I realize I don't know what the material is that I'll be routing or surface-mounting flanges to.

Thanks for the suggestion ... I shoulda been more clear.

As I remember, the Magnatone lap steels used some sort of pine or other lightweight wood under the Mother of Toilet Seat (MOTS) covering.

You might consider buying an Artisan EA-2 lap steel from Musicians' Friend and using the sockets and legs on your guitar. The only limitation would be height - the legs extend to just under six feet (approximately) at the most.

How's about comin' back to the big city of Spindale NC and hang out with the boys at BSharp like y'all did back in '01. A most memorable visit. I was at both shows you did at Legal Grounds.

Nice to see that you've added lap steel to your shows.

I have a Supro and an Oahu with MOTS and they are both quite heavy. They seem to be made out of some species of dense hardwood.[This message was edited by Erv Niehaus on 25 August 2006 at 01:49 PM.]
