I put a sound blaster live card in my Compaq and can not record onto the computer. I wrote a while back and told you that my recording program would bleed over into the other tracks. The compaq has an onboard sound so I disabled it and put in a card but it will not record to the computer now....Tried everything I know and can't get a sound to the computer from my steel.It makes a sound in the speakers but not in the recording program. I also tried the recording program called sound recording built into the system...Nothing...Any idea's would be great...Thanks Ron

Hi Ron;
First, go to My Computer, right-click, select Properties, click on the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button. Look under the Sound Video and Game Controllers section for any red or yellow alerts about malfunctioning devices.

If all components for the SoundBlaster card are displaying as installed and functional the next step is to open the configuration utility for the SoundBlaster, if one was installed. It is possible that by opening the mixer (double-click on the speaker icon in the System Tray) you may find a section muted, or the slider is off. That would be an easy fix.

Lastly, open z box and check to see if the connecting wires have been properly attached to any input terminals on the sound card. Use the diagram in the information sheet that came with it, or visit creative.com and lookup a schematic there.

If nothing else is wrong try plugging your input into a different input jack!

Gotta go. IHTH.

Al;
The red and yellow alerts mean that the hardware needs to be reinstalled. You should first check with the manufacturer's website to see if they have a newer driver than the one that shipped with your hardware. If they do offer a newer driver download the correct one for your device model and install it, then reboot. If no happy happy, try uninstalling the hardware, then reboot and let Windows detect it. Point the New Hardware Found Wizard to the location where you saved the installation files (hard drive or CD or thumbdrive) and let the installation run. Reboot if requested.

Let me know if this helps.

First, the Windows Sound Recorder will only record from the mic input, only.

You need a recording program such as the free "Audacity" to be able to record to the hard drive from the Line In. Do a google search for Audacity.

When installing a SoundBlaster card, first make sure the on-board sound is disabled (in some PC's this is done in the BIOS) and next the installation instructions are to NOT allow Windows to search and/or install drivers and to bypass that step when Windows first starts. After Windows is started then run the SB installation program to properly install the SB card.

If after that you are still not getting line in recording, check the Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices to make sure the SB is set as the default device for the various recording and playback devices.

Wiz,I have done all of the above and I get sound through my speakers from my Guitar but it does not record....I am using Adobe audition and it worked with the onboard sound card but would bleed thru to the other tracks so I put the SB card in and disabled the onboard but it will not record for me..the hookups seem to be right and I can hear my guitar thru the speakers..I have the software installed right so I'll keep trying but if you think of something please reply....Thanks Ron

One other issue, the Volume Control Panel. There are separate volume controls (and mutes) for Recording and "playback". If it's not recording, check the Recording properties for the Line In and make sure it's not muted and that the volume control slider is not in the down (off) position.

You can also try selecting "what you hear" (system mixer) for the recording input, in your recording program, and see if that allows you to record.

A note, the Mic input is MONO only, not stereo like the line in. The Mic jack uses a stereo plug but the ring is for 5VDC that a computer mic needs to work.

Based on your original comment about channels bleeding over, you still need the stereo Line In jack to work so you can use both channels.
