I have a Vibrosonic and was told that removing the master vol. would improve the tone,
It also has a stock Gouss 15" speaker and I was thinking a JBL may help.
It has a grainy distorted sound that is kind of blues-ish, but breaks up very easy.
It has new power tubes.
What are the opinions of how to get a cleaner sound.

Thanks Ken

Have the amp gone through by a tech, to replace all the electrolytic capacitors, check resistor values, install balanced set of tubes, rebias the amp.

I have a Vibrosonic hooked up to an Electrovoice EVM15L. Very clean. Has to be supercranked to distort.

Check in with Jon Bessent in Austin http://www.tonecraftamprepair.com/ He helped me go through my Vibrosonic and restore it to top condition.

What Alan said.

The MV has absolutely no audible effect on the amp if it's left cranked. Guys have been removing them for years since the MV amps were considered to be inferior - but it had nothing to do with the MV itself, as long as it wasn't used.

It sounds like it just needs servicing and setup. If you don't know what the bias setting is or when the caps were done (if ever), it definitely needs to go into the shop.

Speaker choices are pretty wide-open, but usually the 15" Gauss ones are really clean. I'd have the electronics dialed-in before spending money on a speaker.

Assuming this is the 100-watt Vibrosonic (as opposed to the 40-50 watt Vibrasonic) a JBL might not handle the power.

Ken, when you get it serviced, be sure to tell the technician that it is for pedal steel and you want it to play clean with maximum headroom. They are so use to 6-stringers asking them to make "blackface" type changes to lower the distortion threshold and add crunch that they will automatically make parts and bias choices that go in that direction to "improve your tone." I once had a siverface Pro Reverb come back from servicing and the tech was very proud of the free "blackface" mods he had given me without my asking for them. It made the amp sound bad for pedal steel. The lesson is to be specific.

I went to tonecraft and at first he said that it sounded good but upon opening it up it had some sort of mod that made it distort a little.
Nice guy !! Great service in one day.
Thanks a bunch Alan and forumites

Seems like a 100 years ago, but I used to play lead guitar with a fellow from Johnstown, Pa, his name is Don Martz, [he really turned me on to steel guitar] anyhow, Don had a Fender Vibrasonic with the Gauss 15" speaker, I thought it sounded super good back in that day. But its been years since I have even seen one. I would not change that speaker myself.
