Is there an electronic tuner-sized gadget that plays audio samples of chords? Specifically I'm thinking of something that does this: you punch in the name of any chord and the display shows which notes comprise the chord and pushing another button plays an audio sample of the chord...preferably with the option to hear the notes sounded individually as well as strummed. I've seen the chord finder 'calculators' that show the chord patterns as they relate to a six string guitar neck, but that's not what I'm after. I want to hear the chord and have its notes named. If it also shows six string fingering that's fine. Something like what I've described would be pretty handy for us theory challenged steel players. Besides being a great quick reference tool we might even learn a bit of theory using it.

Don't know of any handheld gadgets that do that, but there are lots of (even free) software programs for ear-training that do that. Band-in-a-Box also has that function in it.

I can't find one either Jim. Planet Waves has the 'ChordMaster' ...a palm size chord finder with a touch screen interface but there's no audio as far as I can see. There's two versions of it, one having an added tuner and metronome priced dirt cheap at $39. You'd think there would be a more elaborate choice with audio and an array of playback controls.
In a perfect world some manufacturer( eg. who better than Peterson? ) would offer a handheld electronic chord finder specifically for steelers. You'd program in your tuning and copedant and you'd get not only an audio reference for chords but a display of how to access them within your setup. Not a big enough market to warrant the R&D I guess. Sad

Bill,

I dont know of a portable unit on the market but
give a try to the following web site.
www.chordfinder.com

It gives the chords on a six string lay-out with a midi playback of the chord. It will also give you different variations of the chords and the notes that make up that chord.

Thanks for the info David. I've actually used that site before. My problem with it is that my PC is in a different part of the house than my steel guitar. I may see if I can save the individual midi files from the site and burn them to a CD which I could then access while I'm at my guitar. If I had a laptop the Chordfinder site would be very handy.
This software by Stephen O'Brien:

coupled with audio in a handheld unit would be ideal but pretty expensive to develop I would imagine.

Bill,
Check this out, I have it and it's almost worth the price just to listen to.He tells you what strings/pedals to get major/minor 7,9,etc.Does not give string note, just which strings, and position.
