This is really an attempt to post my first-ever picture on the Forum.... (I have my fingers crossed!!!)
...but this is a nice looking guitar, isn't it? It has Joe Glaser's B-bender on it, too!
This is the electric that I'd save in a fire.

I see some cars in the background that don't look too bad either. |

I believe that's a Chrysler Windsor right behind me. That's the annual classic car get-together in Medora, ND. The white Cadillac looks to be mid-'60s, don't you think?
Although I'm British through-and-through, I have a great love for 'real' American cars. What a shame that one of the things the US once led the world in - big, comfortable V-8s with extravagant lines - have become environmental anachronisms; nowadays, I have trouble even getting whitewall tyres for my Town Car!
What is the world coming to?

Nice guitar, Tommy! Do you know anything about the years they made these? I bought mine used at a vintage show in New jersey in 1998, so I have no idea. I had Joe G. fit the b-bender the same year, and it's been my #1 electric ever since.
I paid $700 for the guitar which was a steal at that time; new ones with a lower spec were much more in the stores. I still have its original black hardshell case, though it never gets used - mine lives in a gig-bag.
Yours has Barden pick-ups, doesn't it? I believe mine are 'stock', but I really don't know. Joe Glaser switched the bridge to a Gotoh, otherwise it's unchanged.

Thanks Roger! I don't know too much about the years these were made. Unfortunately I don't own this guitar anymore. I actually owned it twice. I originally bought it used for $650.00 in 2000. It had a #3 neck (pretty wide) with a rosewood fingerboard when I bought it. I bought several ASAT Classics during this time and did some neck swapping. I sold this guitar to my pal, Texas singer-songwriter Tommy Alverson, who kept it a couple of years, then sold it back to me. Bobby Flores currently has a green ASAT Classic that was the mate to the maple neck you see on this sunburst ASAT. I added the Bardens, but I always liked the stock G&L pickups just fine really. _________________ Tommy Detamore

Had to get my AST in the picture too. At the very bottom is the Hipshot, tho I don't have the lever arms attached. |

Thanks, Doug, but I was asking more specifically when the high-end (double-edge binding and birds-eye necks) ones were made. I haven't seen many like mine.

Doug,
No. All there is is the 'Asat Classic' logo on the head, but that's a pretty general classification. I can't imagine that one would have just 'got lucky' with the highly-figured birds-eye maple - it was surely an added option, and there are plenty of 'ACs' with single binding, or even no binding.
The serial # on mine is 0038803. I just happened to see it at the show, I tried it, and pulled out my Visa in an instant. It was the end of the afternoon, so I got a break on his original asking-price.
I've become so accustomed to this guitar and now I wish I knew a little more about it's ancestry. All US G&Ls are pretty good - it actually, though, doesn't sound exactly like a Tele, but has its own characteristics. What it does have over a standard Tele is the neck pick-up; this one is really warm and much more 'usable' than that rather weedy-sounding Fender effort.
Thanks for all the responses - especially Tony P's contribution!

Thanks for that link, Doug - that's an interesting site.
As I said above, my b-bender was fitted by Joe Glaser in Nashville (in my opinion, his is the best one); so, it wasn't a factory-fitted.
Mine has a three-bolt neck. I've been unable to find the page on that site with the examples of serial numbers/dates, but I'll persevere.
All this talk is making me think about looking for another G&L!
RR
PS: Mine has the most resilient finish I've ever known on a guitar - mine's worked hard in the nine years I've had it, and it's had its share of accidental knocks. The body is still unblemished. |

I've owned and played G&L guitars in the past, I think they are wonderful. The prices on them have gone way up in the last few years, I knew that would happen.

Roger,
You gotta always wear the white shirt when gigging with that guitar - it's a killer combination.
I'm a sucker for figured maple necks.....great looking guitar! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars
