HSGA Joliet rollcall - 2.5 month countdown
Ok, let's get a preliminary headcount.
How many of you forumites are planning on attending the HSGA Annual Joliet, IL convention Oct 12-14, 2006?
This year's guest of honor is famed Hawaiian steeler Dick Sanft.
In addition to playing on stage each day of the convention, Dick Sanft will host an informal talk-story session on Friday night. Dick will answer questions and demonstrate his steel guitar technique as well as share stories about his lifetime in Hawaiian music including his 20 year tenure as steel guitarist in residence at Walt Disney World.
Nightly jam sessions till the wee hours.
Vintage instruments.
Vintage musicians.
Contemporary musicians.
Daily stage performances.
Saturday night luau and floor show (Hawaiian music and song, hula dancers & rope twirlers).
Too much food & drink.
Unparalleled steel guitar learning experiences.
Experiences we won't tell your spouse about. (just kidding)
Get your registration forms in soon for discount hotel rates and playing slots.

Glad to hear that you are attending this year Chuck! You'll have a blast and your playing will add a lot to the weekend.
Thursday afternoon?? Most diehards show up on Wednesday and have to be forcefully removed from the hotel on Sunday.

I should be there for the nightly jams starting Wednesday, with a full cooler and a couple of cheap ukes tuned in a confusing key.
Is there a better way to get non HSGA/non forumites into the luau on Saturday? Last year I had to rely on Bob H. paying for my wife and I Friday morning (thanks again Bob). I know a few people locally that would probably like to go.
[This message was edited by Craig Stenseth on 26 July 2006 at 08:14 AM.]

Barbara Kuhns, Floyd Alexander, and I will be rolling into Joliet late afternoon on Wednesday. We try to set up the sound system before the evening gathering begins, but we don't always make it. I understand we'll be in a different room this year. We may feel the need to experiment with speaker placement in the new room.
I don't have any "inside" information, but past conventions have often had surprise visitors.
One time Merle and Ronnie Kekuku showed up from Hawaii unannounced at the Holiday Inn-that was fun!

I'll be there for sure. Trying to talk some friends into coming out with me. Keoni Cohelo from Denver area is a great singer, and I'm bugging my uke-addicted friends to come as well.

I believe that some of the SGForumites should come to this particular convention to expand their musical horizons.
I heard some explanations on this Forum for not coming to the Convention that sound like my wife.
She proceeds to explain all of the reasons why she should not come, i.e. I have so many things to do and it would not be a good use of my time. Or she pines that she doesn't particularly regard this as her favorite kind of music, etc, etc..
Any way she shows some mild resistance, but then comes and thoroughly enjoys it afterwards and then thanks me for bringing her because she had a good time.
Again the moral of the story: Expand your horizons, it may lead you to some new musical ideas and approaches.
Aloha,
Don

We may have to get reservations to Al's. Looks like a lot of people have found out about it. I suggest reservations 2-3 weeks in advance.
We need a coordinator for this outing.
