Anyone know of a way with the standard C6 setup to get the top strings of the Leon McAullife E13 intervals? Only way I've found is with P6 and a high D but they're out of order. I'd like to have G on top anyway.

Tab:

C6+P6  -1/2 to E13
D         C#
F         E
C         B
A         G#
G         F#
Eb        D

Maybe I'm missing something simple or maybe I should just leave well enough alone Smile

P5 gives you a D9th
knee lowers C to B to make it a 13th
at the 2nd fret you have:
Tab:
  open 2-fret
1  D     E
2  E     F#
3  B     C#
4  A     B
5  F#    G#
6  E     F#
7  C     D
8  A     B

I use this position all the time when I want a 13th chord.

I was in a music store on Lake St in Mlps years ago and saw Hal Rug come to town and sit down and retune Gordy Parkers guitar with a C6 to a E9 with the Same heavy duty strings.just to show us some licks from a E6 tuning. I imagine he used this tuning at some time in his past. No pedals were used of course, just a E6 tuning, but boy was it sweet sounding.
G--C6 tuning ----G# E6 tuning
E ----------------E
C ----------------C#
A-----------------B
G-----------------G#
E-----------------E
C-----------------C#
A ----------------B
F-----------------?
C-----------------?
He then had Don Helms Tuning on the first 8 strings but enough to show us , how Don Helms played A E6 neck.Of course i found out he used a tuning like this for years. But he was a heck of a picker, and from Mn. too.

Use both feet on the pedals. 5 and 7 will give you a pretty good version of the Leon tuning.

It did not have any resemblance to Don Helms tuning!
Sorry! Sad
Any other ideas from anyone?

Don Helms has a high G#. I use the E9th neck to get Don Helms-ish sounds, alternating the first pedal up and down to get B or C# as required. (Note that Uncle Don never plays the two strings together - a secret of his unique sound.)

On my C6th, I put the D string between C and E. Doing that makes the P5+k position more similar to Leon's E13th at the 2nd fret:
Tab:
  P5+k
  open 2-fret
1  E
2  D     E
3  B     C#  (lowered C to B with knee lever)
4  A     B
5  F#    G#  (lowered G to F# with P5)
6  E     F#
7  C     D
8  A     B
9  F#    G#  (raised F to F# with P5)
10 D     E   (raised C to D with P5)

I have been staying out of the way of the C# and B;s sounding together. Good point!

Thanks for all the good answers. Looks like I can't avoid the D on top if I really want the 1 on top. Funny thing is I use the P5 w/ lowered B all the time and never even thought about that for some reason.

Oh, and the Don Helms E tuning is basically a 6 tuning, just look at strings 2-9 at the 4th fret on C6..

Also, the high D string adds a 13th note to the F9 chord created by P6. This chord is one half-step higher than Leon's E13th, but it sounds the same. Again, look at it with the top two strings swapped:
Tab:
   P6   Leon
1 +F     E
2  D     C#
3  C     B
4  A     G#
5  G     F#
6 -Eb    D
7  C     B
8  A     G#
9  F     E

I have to say that putting the D between C and E feels very natural to me. I know that some people say it gets in the way, but I've always been comfortable with "skip grips".

b0b - Now we're back where this whole thing started w/ P6! You need to put D back where it belongs on top - don't you know that's where all the famous guys have it?

Hey, I'm pretty famous too! Wink

You're right of course. I was playing a C6th lap steel the other day, thinking about the origin of P6. I often use a bar slant to get a 7th chord:
Tab:

E ____8_______
C ____/_______
A ____7_______
G ____/_______
E ____6_______
C __________
    C7 notes Bb, E, C

... and so I thought that maybe the slant was the origin of the P6 changes. This topic has given me a new insight Idea perhaps P6 was invented to emulate the low part of Leon's E13.
