Bear with me please; I am one of those that needs things to be rather clear:

Could an HSGA Insider please decipher or otherwise explain the info on the HSGA Waikiki Convention webpage:

All events are free of charge and open to the public.
A daily fee is charged to attend the 'Akala Ballroom events in the hotel Wednesday through Friday.
An additional fee will be charged to include buffet luncheon service.
The Convention registration fee includes a (the?) buffet luncheon served each day in the Akala Ballroom...
Tickets will be provided at the door to registered guests.

If all events are open to the public and free, ...then what is the $78 registration fee for?
Maybe it's easier to fill in the blanks:

The following events are open to the public: _______.
The following events are free of charge to the public: _______.
The following events are included in the registration fee: _______.

A daily fee of $_______ is charged (whom?)_______ to attend the 'Akala Ballroom events in the hotel Wednesday through Friday.

(What about non-registered general public that events are currently said to be open to and free of charge?).

The events in the Akala Room (hotel) involve an admission charge. The Convention registration fee for those three days of activities including lunch is $78.

The Convention registration fee includes a buffet luncheon served each day in the Akala Ballroom from approximately 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. A traditional Hawaiian buffet luncheon will be provided on Friday, April 27th. Tickets will be provided at the door to registered guests.

Saturday, April 28th: Hawaiian Steel Guitar Concert
Site: The Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Admission: Free
Sunday, April 29th: 2007 Jerry Byrd Steel Guitar Ho'olaule'a Concert

Site: The Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse, 2nd Floor Ballroom Stage

Description: A four-hour concert featuring the world's best Hawaiian steel guitar artists in solo and ensemble performances.

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Admission: Free, with a suggested donation of $10 to the HSGA to help defray concert costs.

Event: Lei Day in Kapi'olani Park, HSGA Concert

Site: Lei Day Contest Winners' Display area stage and canopy.

Description: Featuring live Hawaiian steel guitar music by the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association. Twenty minutes, including setup time will be allowed per performer.

Time: 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.

Admission: Free

Thank you for catching that error Rick. I've corrected the phone number and reposted the webpage.

But, you phrased your posting incorrectly.

A typical coorespondence to the HSGA should read...

"I tried calling Kamaka Tom but the number on the webpage was wrong. Why can't the HSGA be like it was when "Jerry" was around. Things have really gone downhill since then. I don't even want to be part of an organization that can't get a phone number right. Back in the old days this would never have happened"

So, if you're not having the luncheon buffet, it's $10.00 a day.

One word of warning if you're parking across the street from the Queen Kapiolani. Make sure you feed that meter. Police regularly monitor and cite cars parked there 24/7, so no one's exempt even if you play steel guitar. They even cited JB four years ago.

These "snippets" of resentment toward HSGA ... that appear frequently here ... have baffled those of us who are trying our hardest to make the organization "live long and prosper".

Personally I would love to know what is going on ...

And since these kind of comments appear on this forum ... I'd like the responses to be made ... right here.

Thanks for posting the Honolulu Advertiser link Derrick. The article reads:

Amateur and professional Hawaiian steel guitar musicians will perform from 8:35 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the 'Akala Ballroom of the hotel, intended for participating performers.

Admission is $10 per day, $26 for a luncheon buffet from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

I'm confused. What do they mean by:

the 'Akala Ballroom of the hotel, intended for participating performers.

Do I have to be a participating performer to enter the Akala room? If I book a room in the hotel am I required to sleep in the Akala room. Do I have to share a bathroom? When is check-out time?

They also state:

Admission is $10 per day, $26 for a luncheon buffet from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

So is it $36 for the concert and the lunch? What if I just want lunch? (I hear that there are no restaurants in Waikiki, this might be a good deal) Can I just pay the $26, grab a sandwich off the buffet and not have to listen to that steel guitar music?

Hi Gerald,

You may want to concact Kamaka Tom for clarification as I'm pretty sure the information here in the Advertiser was submitted by him.

From what I've seen in the past Hawaii convention, there were few outsiders that came to the ballroom performances other than the members of HSGA.

I don't think one can come in just to take in the buffet; you'd be charged for the admission too, or be asked to go to another buffet at the top floor of the hotel if you just want food.

Lorene Ruymar told me a few years back that HSGA has a deal with the hotel. Free use of the ballroom, as long as members take in the buffet, so this is why they try to push the admission/buffet price. $26.00, I believe, is the cost of the admission price and the buffet for a single day.

There are other restaurants in walking distance if you decide not to have the buffet. Ted's Burgers and Lulu's seem to be a popular place for members, and there are a few more places just a block away.

You won't be able to sleep in the ballroom. After the performances are done, they lock the room.
