1. In the late 40s we had 3 78s released here which gave us our first taste of Al Kealoha Perry and His Singing Surfriders and introduced us to Hawaiian Cowboy/Polynesian Love Song - Hula One One E/Pokii - Twilight In Hawaii/ At Night By The Ocean with Andy Iona. Over time we found out that this was the band with the Hawaii Calls Show and the steel guitarist was David Kelii. In the mid-fifties an Hawaii Calls 10" Capitol LP, CLP 042 came out with Al Kealoha Perry and introduced us to Lovely Hula Girl and I'll See You In Hawaii among the others. Does anyone know for certain who the steel guitarist is on this LP?
2. A few of us were talking about sorting yourself out on the guitar with a number, single notes, harmony, chords, octaves and it occurred to me that I cannot recall Jerry ever using octaves. Maybe I have not paid enough attention. Any views?
3. Does anyone know when falsetto became part of Hawaiian singing? If we accept that authentic Hawaiian was pre- European, falsetto would not have any part in the chants. As such, it really does not feature in the choral arrangements by the missionaries. Any views on this? |

| An octave plus a third is commenly referred to as a "10th". Bass players also use it a lot and it's a very pleasing interval. |

The pianist Billy Mayerl was a master of the 'Off beat and Tenth' style of left hand !! fwiw

Thanks Bas. - JM is either / or but not for sure. I might try Hawaii Calls on this machine - not high hopes, but you never know.
Or Don McDiarmid Jnr. Met his dad while we were there and he was full of info. willingly given - maybe Jnr. has the same enthusiasm. It is ot the end of the world if nothing comes of this, but it would be nice to know. Kindest |

Mac, I've just been listening to the 10" AND the 12"..My 10" is the Australian release with the ONE hula girl on the cover..

It was recorded on the 12th July 1953 in Hawaii at Waikiki.
SO.. being as David left Hawaii for LA in 1952 (And later Las Vegas in 1958) Jules ah See is the player, there is no question about that, but the style may mislead you somewhat.
Jules took over from David as the player with the 'Hawaii Calls Show' (And records) in 1952, but I speculate that he was instructed to play in David's style on the shows and particularly on this record as Al Kealoha Perry wasn't impressed with Jules' "Jazzy style and chords"
So much so that on the shows Al positioned himself on the far side of the stage to Jules.
On the later released 12" there were 4 extra tracks and you can hear Jules slowly reverting to his own style.
This is what JM and myself have managed to deduce so far.
BTW. JM says that the current Aloha Dream is the best yet, PLEASE let us know what YOU think..

Had a listen... sounds very Jules to me. However as Baz pointed out, the playing is rather understated for Jules.

Such a coincidence that the 10" was recorded in Hawaii on the 12th July 1953 .. 53 years ago tomorrow !!
Also just about the time that I started Playing Hawaiian Guitar.. Sometime in the summer of '53 anyway.. |

| Thanks to all for a definite answer. I mentioned this to Alan Akaka when we were over there and he said that David changed his style from the fast clipped playing to something more relaxed when he started playing a stand up guitar. I was disappointed when i first got the LP, I had been expecting more Hula One One E style but it very quickly became my top listening record and still is. And that beautiful liquid tuning in Hawaiian Wedding Song, don't know what you call it. I found it ok. but haven't done anything with it, one day perhaps. Thanks again to all. |

Mac, I've slightly enhanced the audio from the album, just to help with the steel player's identification.
You can hear Jules using embryonic versions of his signature licks, like in Lovely Hula Girl at 0:57 - 1:07 (and at 1;23 in the Hawaiian Wedding Song) he plays the B11 phrases from 'How Dya Do' and so on.
The Tunings in use throughout this Album are:- B11(Sometimes A6th),
C6 (Sometimes C13th)
and E13th
I've noticed also the signature 'Hawaii Calls' C6 1st and 4th and then 2nd and 5th string harmonics, used so often later, I believe this is the FIRST instance of this 'Hook"
You can find it used at 00:29 in the Wedding song. and just about everywhere else that he can find to put it.

Also the Files CLP-042A and CLP-042B are UN-Processed just for comparison.
I simulated the late 50's Hawaii Calls Eq and ambience, and tried to create a STEREO effect from a purely MONO source.
I'd like to hear more of Jeff's opinion.
