It's a nice guitar but I wonder if those tuners are original? My 55' has lollipop tuners with slide neck selector switches and no "blender control". I'm pretty sure those push button neck switches were later generation type 56'-59'. |

Thanks for posting this Nick,
I don't know Andy, my "55" looks exactly like the one Nick posted, but with the bridge covers.
Under the first neck tuning pan is 11/55.
It has the blender controls and push button neck selector switches. The serial number on mine is about the same but a little lower. The pickups on mine are wonderfully "hot". The sound is fantastic!!
I checked with Jody Carver, he never liked the push button selector and told Leo so. Jody uses multi necks in his performances & the push buttons didn't avail him this amazing ability too well. And you and I both know, it's clanky, not too good for recording sessions. Not that I have to worry about that!!
Jody also mentioned to me that Leo finally went to the blade switch after "55", like maybe 56/57.
Anyway, this one is a beauty. I wonder if it has the "hard to get bridge" covers.
Andy, the way this one is priced, you & I have to watch this one, eh? TX
Rgds,
Ron

After reading this post I am wondering if 1955 was a transition year for the Stringmaster. Andy, you said your '55 had the lollipop tuners and the individual on/off slide selector for each neck, like all the Stringmasters had from '53 until then. Now we see a guitar with a very late 1955 date, with the newer 4-on-a-strip tuning pan, and the push button setup. Our understanding is that Fender went to the Telecaster-like knife selecter switch shortly after the push button arrangemenet was abandoned (thankfully), leaving us with the setup that stayed intact until the Stringmaster was phased out in the early '80s.
Could it be possible that some '55s were built with one configurationm and the later ones with others? Just wondering what you guys think.
When I pulled off the tuning pans on my '53 T8, I noticed that the cavity was machined to be exactly rectangular, as are those on Andy's '55. Were the tuning pan cavities machined with a tapered pocket to match the tapered tuning pans that came later? That would be on the non-lollipop, 4-on-a-strip, oval shaped tuner configuration. |

I had 2 '56's. One (24" scale)had the push button neck selector and the other (22.5") had the slide switch. |
