What Earnest said...

I run Steel->Revelation->volume->Revelation. With a Revelation the only setup that makes sense is to run the steel straight into the vari-z input. Are you asking whether to use the loop or put the volume pedal between the Revelation and the power amp?

Tim, the benefits of the 3-wire setup are basically these.

1. You can maximize the potential of the variable impedance knob as a tone control on the pickup.

2. You can have the "tuner" jack send out full signal to a tuner with the volume pedal falling after that point. This allows for hands-free silent tuning. Simply turn the volume pedal down to silent while the tuner still sees full signal.

3. Whether you use a pot pedal or an active pedal, the pickup directly "sees" the first tube. Personally I'm a huge fan of this idea of a pickup's very first active stage being a tube. Also, if you use an active pedal before the first input, you eliminate the functionality of the Vari-Z (variable impedance) control as a tone control because the pickup's signal has been made active first by a transitor device instead of the Rev's first tube stage. The vari-z needs to see a raw pickup to work right.

But there are no rules. Whatever sounds best to you is the right way. If you want try to go guitar-VP-preamp, then you may also want to try skipping that first "black box" buffer/vari-z stage and simply plug into the "return" jack. This would be like plugging right into the input on an old Twin. It takes one tube stage out of the path. You may or may not like that.

Does anyone use the Rev pre into the power amp in on a combo amp? How would that sound as opposed to a full rack system?

Well I've only done one gig with mine yet. It was at a small bar so I only used one NV-112 as a powered cab. The sound technician was super impressed with my sound overall and particularly with the low end I was producing with just the RTP and that small amp. In fact when I was tearing down he came over with a bunch of questions and he wanted to know what gauge my lowest string was. He couldn't believe that my heaviest gauge string was only a .038. Next weekend we'll be in a much bigger room and I can hardly wait to hear what the RTP does through both NV-112s.

When you're using the Rev through the NV112's, are you using the reverb in the amp or seperate processor?

Roger, I'm using a TC Electronic M350 effects processor. It has a great selection of high quality reverbs as well as very decent delays, choruses etc.
A nice feature of the Revelation preamp is the rear panel parallel effects loop which ideally suited to rackmount effects processors.

Roger I sometimes plug my Rev into the back of the NV1000 and it sounds really great.....my rack with 2 15's is about as good as it gets, but using the NV1000 is a pretty close second.

Roger, it's worth noting that if you're using the 'power amp in' jack on the rear of your NV-112 you will lose access to the amp's own reverb. But if you prefer stompbox reverb such an RV-3 you would just add it into your front panel volume pedal loop on the RTP. ( as well as any other stompbox effects) By using the NV-112 'power amp in' jack you also disable the 'preamp out' jack on the amp. That's not a problem though. For connecting more than one speaker cab or guitar amp the Revelation has two 1/4" output jacks and two balanced XLR jacks on the rear panel. Additionally, there's a front panel 'stereo out' jack that we tapped into to run to the house mixing console last week. These things are loaded with intelligent design features.
