I haven't seen a Profex for sale lately so what would
one bring with the foot controller?
Thanks

Probably around $300 if it's all in good condition. A Profex II with the steel guitar presets sold recently on Ebay for around $350, but you know how Ebay is. It may not have actually sold, but was bid up by a schill bidder, which is against Ebay rules, but happens quite frequently anyway. The bidder list looks a bit suspicious. Usually a Profex II on Ebay goes for around $125 to $200. But you never know what you're getting either. Most of these have some degree of battery leakage damage.

What's the deal with the ProFex II anyway? I see the pop up a lot in this forum. Were they a particular quality that is different from other multi-fx?

Thanks Darvin. The one I took on trade seems to be in
good shape but doesn't have the steel presets. Would it bring 275.00?

I recently got a Profex II on the forum for $160. It had a few road scratches on the front. I sent it to Ken Fox who put all the upgrades on it and loaded it with all the presets. Total cost about $280 I think. It's sounding great. If yu don't have the presets you can get a text file of those settings (I can email it to you) and set them yourself manually. It would take a bunch of time but most of the presets are fantastic.

James, I have a Profex II and also a Rocktron Intellifex and a TC Electronics G Major. As far as I can see, the main draw of the Profex II for steel players is simply the Peavey name, with its association with steel amplification. The effects quality is no better, and is to my ears noticeably inferior to the G Major, and the Profex II is a lot noisier, even with the chip upgrades. The only other plus I see for the Profex II is a more intuitive, user-friendly interface--which is a not inconsiderable virtue.

I think another real attraction of the Profex II is the ease of loading the steel guitar presets, programmed by Jeff Newman and others. I have bought and sold a bunch of them, but I don't use one, I like my old Digitech 2112 better.

Chuck, you can probably get $275 for it, especially with the foot controller. The controller alone will usually bring around $50.

In thinking further about it, I realize that the Profex is actually a preamp with effects processor built in (like the Digitech 2112, I believe) while the others I have are just effects processors. So the Profex can be used in a component system in a way the others can't. My basic mindset is to use a self-sufficient combo amp with effects as optional icing on the cake, so I don't think of the Profex from that angle.

As to the Newman steel presets, I have them in my Profex, but I hardly like any of them personally. Any effects device I've ever had I've always programmed my own presets anyway. For me it would be better if companies wouldn't "waste" memory on factory presets that I won't ever use. Programming my own is often a pain in the wazoo, but I, perhaps perversely, find it fun and rewarding.
