My Session 500 has been exhibiting some strange behavior. Every 1 or 2 rehearsals/performances, the sound dies away after around 15-30 minutes, but the power is still on. No sound comes out of the amp - but if I turn it off and back on, it immediately is working again. Other than that, the tone and sound are perfect as always.

Anyone have some ideas about what the problem could be? I bought this used and it's extremely likely this amp has never been serviced before.

Also, what is the current contact info for Mike Brown? I'm wondering if I should just have the whole thing gone over.

John, most likely the problem is going to be the POWER AMP IN jack on the rear panel, the RETURN jack on the frontpanel or the speaker output jack on the rear panel. Close the loop by connecting a short instrument cable between the POWER AMP IN and PREAMP OUT jacks and a second cable between the IN and OUT jack on the front panel. If the problem does not occur again after these connections are made, then I suggest that you have a tech swap out the POWER AMP IN jack and/or the RETURN jack. However, the problem could lie in the actual speaker out jack, so have a tech check that too.

If you wish to return your power module and preamp, send them to;

John, I would try exercising ALL the Female 1/4" jacks with your guitar cord's 1/4" plug. Some of the Female Jacks have contacts that are in the signal path and can become dirty and /or corroded and cause this very thing. You could also use a little contact spray cleaner into the jacks that might help too.
It may be something else, but I would try that first.
Hope this helps.

Good point. It probably wouldn't hurt for the amp to be serviced here at the factory since it is quite an old amp.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a try tomorrow and hopefully it will be that easy. Strange that cycling the power clears it up. I have a couple shows coming up and I'm going to miss this amp a lot until I'm sure it's ok.

You both were exactly right. The problem was my power amp input. Unfortunately, trying to work-around with patch cables is introducing some noise into the signal, so I won't be able to get away with it for gigs.

Thanks again for your help. Replacing the jacks is an easy fix, but now I'm getting paranoid about what else might be going on under the hood. Mike, I'll be in touch soon and see what we can arrange.

I had the same problem and all I had to do was clean all the connectors and jacks which is quite a chore
with the 500 .. all those screws .. some needed replacement .. they get worn ..
