| What's your choice for currently-manufactured rack-mount pre-amps and power amps? I'm posting this for a steel player who does not have internet access and would like to try a rack system for a change. |

THAT gets pretty individual, but FWIW, I use a Pod Pro XT driving a Stewart World 1.6 into either one or two PV `15" BW's mounted in closed back Marrs cabinets. I generallly only use one (speaker) at a time, except for steel shows. (Nobody else appreciates the tone.)
My 'spare' WAS a N112, but that'w gonna be sold, and the spare is now another PodPro XT and a Crate Power Block. |

As far as preamps go I recently bought a Revelation Tube Preamp from Brad Sarno and it is out of this world. We're all familiar with the addage that better gear won't make you a better player. Well it certainly can in an indirect way. It may sound screwy but I've had my RTP about a week and half and I've definitely advanced my skill and musical vocabulary a good bit because the thing is such a joy to play through that I can't stay off my guitar. Instead of the usual hour or so a day I've been putting in at least twice that much practice time. I really can't recommend it enough...totally amazing tone, flexibility and old fashioned quality.

I got along for years with Tube Works components but am now in the process of undating my rack.
I really bit the bullet and Brad Sarno is now in the process of building me a Revelation pre-amp and I have a VHT 2902 tube amp on order with Musicians Friend.
After being solid state, I am now going all tube.
Hope the difference is worth the expense!  |

I haven't yet saved up for one of Brad's rigs, but a good alternative for $200-$300 is a Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp (all tube). They don't make them anymore, but watch the forum and fleabay. I bought a used Mosvalve 500 solid state power amp (used; ~$250) and run one, or two 15" JBL' cabs. The reverb on the preamp is a real hummer, so I use a Boss RV-5 to cut the noise.
BTW, it's anything but light!!! |

| I've had a Revelation Pre for over a year now and it's the best bit of kit I have ever played through. I also use a Peavey DPC750 power amp which I have had for about 12 years or so - I've had it serviced once and it has never missed a beat in that whole time -- of 3 to 4 gigs a week. |
