Tom Morrell sessions

Post by Bob Bernhard »

Hi, does anybody have a complete list of Tom Morrell's sessions with Tom as backup? I picked up a couple in Texas by Leon Chambers and was looking for a few by Bobby Boatwright, but he was too ill to attend show.

Here's an obscure one, with some great Tommy:

I'd also recommend the Don Edwards Tribute to Gene Autry. I was at the show, and Tom had the Bigsby with him. A mellow set, but Don's a great singer, and the playing/recording is awesome for a live set.

Thanks for starting this thread, Mike. If I can add a couple, maybe others can do the same.

Tom played on one or two Dayna Wills albums. I'll email her so she can chime in on this string.

He also played on on at least a couple of albums by Trudy Fair, On the Texas Side, and I've Just Got to Be a Cowboy.

This is great to have a Tom Morrell discography.

Tom also played Pedal Steel on several jazz albums with John & Jerry Case in the mid-'70's.

Some of the albums were titled: Sextet Sessions, Eclipse and Serenade.

I believe the label may have been called 'Priority'.

Tom sounded great on the Don Edwards Tribute to Gene Autry. I recommend that one all the way around.

Yes, Tom played on all 3 of my CDs. I had never met him. I sent him a list of tunes and a cassette of how I wanted to do them. When we all got ready he asked which one I wanted to start with. I said "That one." He grabbed a blank sheet of paper, wrote the chart in about 5 min. and we counted it off. When the song was done, he would listen to a replay and then he said, "Now what one do you want to do?" He was very prepared and very fast. Of course, the guys have played these Wills tunes forever, but I was impressed at how well they played my original stuff. I think b0b may still have my CDs for sale here....
They are: Bob's Sister Helen's Kid Vol I, BSHK "Swingin' After Midnight" Vol. II, and BSHK "Inside Out" Vol III.
