Well i am one of these guys that always said the mods were a waste of time and money(when it came to guitars) electronics thats a different story, but Tommy Young has come up with a way to get rid of that brassy sound that a mullen guitar seems to have on the 7,8,9 and 10th strings which has gave me a fit,i love the mullen guitar i think it is the best built on the market,it just had that one thing that bugged me,so talk to Tommy if you want i promise you it WILL make a difference in your guitar...

Well that is hard to explain,i guess the sound is too clearand you get the brass sound when you strike the string like it has a mid tone ring to it,i always thought it was the brass rollers but a friend of mine went to alum rollers and it did not change..If you don't hear the sound i am talkin about then good but it really bugged me 24+ years on a push pull tuned my ears i guess...wish i could explain it better but Tommy got it to go away so there it is...

Thanks Charlie for the thread as i wasn't expecting it but sure makes me feel good to have players such as yourself and others, enjoy all the hard work and thought that is put into trying to change an already great guitar to what I, myself love to hear out of these exquistly built fine playing instruments. as all of u know ((( TONE ))) is just like {{women)) none are the same. speaking of guitars i do this but not exact mod to other brands as well. Thanks again Charlie for the thread and glad u liked what u love to hear, TOMMY |

Apparently the necks being aluminum wasn't the cause --You feel differently about Promats with aluminum necks, no? |

Mullens seem to have a brassy sound on the lower strings? Was this a new guitar that had the problem. Do all mullens have a brassy sound on the lower strings? If it was new I would have sent it back to the factory. |

Charlie Moore got it right and until you hear and experience what Tommy is doing, regardless of guitar brand, it's difficult to explain in words.
Any of you guys out there that have experienced first hand these changes he has made to either your instrument or a friend's, need to inform others.
I think there are a lot of players out there who are not truly content with their instrument , as I was, but can't quite put their finger on what the problem is or what is missing. Without going into a lot of detail, I tried several things. Now looking back at all that, I now realize what I was searching for, although at that time I did not.
Thanks Tommy for all your hard work and hours of trial and error. Thanks for making such a difference on my guitars. |

Not to long ago mullen posted an thread not supporting Tommy's mod's, I can see there point. I think Tommy has found a niche in the steel industry as well and thats great. My point is if you buy a new PSG and you think it needed to be modified right out of the gate would you still go through with the deal knowing the mod's would add cost to the overall exspense? I'm sorry guys but I'm not a believer. I have seen tallented guys play non-modified guitars and they sound decades ahead of me!

The tightening or loosening of certain screws can have a tremendous effect on the sound and sustain of most pedal steels.
I'll just leave it at that! |

I will state, ONCE AGAIN, the absolute PURE
sound I am getting because of the mod. I have turned Tommy loose on my backup axe now. Brand Name is not
important to Tommy because each guitar is approached
on its individual merits and negatives. He brings
a guitar to its full potential. |

From all the discussions on this forum about the tone of whatever guitar happens to be the subject of the moment, it is quite obvious that some Mullen owners get their feelings hurt anytime the "Tommy mod" is mentioned. Why they feel it neccessary to even weigh in on the post is beyond reasoning but just in case there is an explaination for their need to vent, could it be something like this.
Should I own a Mullen and I liked the tone of my Mullen, I would simply let others talk on. But if I owned a Mullen and was not pleased with the tone of my Mullen but yet I was ashamed to let so many know that after I spent a lot of money on my Mullen and I bragged about it for so long knowing I was displeased, it would surely erk me to the point that everytime someone else got their Mullen back from Tommy and their Mullen sounded so good with the "Tommy Mod" that they wanted to give Tommy some praise for a great job on making a Mullen sound so much better than it did when it left the Mullen factory, I would just have to vent about it. But since I did not want to pay a little extra to make my Mullen sound better (like get rid of that brassy sound)I choose instead to say things like "My Mullen don't need that mod" or "Don't say Mullen in the same sentance with Tommy Young"
But since I don't own a Mullen, which I think I might want to deep inside but I won't admit it and I really do like my Fessenden, I won't say any of those things above like some do.
Just a thought! |

Savell you make good points. I think just about every builder has come under the gun of critism now and then. I have played 2 mullens in my day's they sounded good, yes I would love to own one some day. Truthfully this thing with "mods" leaves me with more question's than answers. |

SAVELL i do appreciate your thought's on this subject as does several others that has posted on here that has had their guitars modified by me and had their thought's and hearing just all but told them they didn't know what they were hearing, its just like all those guy's that have had their amp's modified by electronics people on this forum!!! all steelers don't want nor endorse this type of work, but there are others that enjoy the better sounds and tone that [[ MOST ]] of these changes both mechanical an electronic will do for them.and again SAVELL i appreciate your thought's and so do many other's
A.J. I'm sure from what u say that u don't understand what i do to these guitars and I've done several different brands of guitars in the shop now i have a ZUM,a CARTER, and a MULLEN, that are wanting me to do TONE modifications to!!! as we speak. so please don't take this out on one particular brand of guitar because that isn't the question on here if u think it is then u need to come by or call me at 662-328-9511 and maybe i can explain it some better sorry for the long speech but just had to vent a little i guess while here on a Sunday night, believe me not everyone is happy with the guitar that they get on this fine forum and buy just because it is pretty and play's good, then it gets to their home and WOW what did i get here, no wonder i bought it cheap??????? thanks for the space to TALK and u can e-mail me at tyoung52@wildblue.net or call me at 662-328-9511 feel free to call or e-mail me for information TOMMY |

Charley, you might direct your question to Jerry Newberry. He is a member of the Forum and I believe he sell's Mullens in Arkansas. He and his grandson(Austin Stewart) play Mullens for sure.
