...Good and Bad. That statement has been attributed to many people, including Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. The older I get, the more I agree with the statement!

I thought you were going to say the only 2 kinds were Country and Western.

I once played in a band that claimed it played both Rock and Roll. Evil Twisted

Seriously, I think the 2 kinds are stuff I like and stuff I dislike. I don't think I know enough to pass judgment of what's good and bad.

Except maybe for the Shaggs.

That's right. I think we can safely say that the Shaggs are good.

I don't like the value judgement thing at all.
To me either I like it or I don't.

Yes, that's probably a more accurate way to describe it.

Doug,

I'll give it some thought. But. what's there to think about? One man's junk, is quite often another man's treasure. It's a matter of discrimination, if you get my drift.

I guess the only thing to think about is the meaning of the terms good music and bad music. I wonder what Duke meant by this?

I think he meant that music he personally liked was good and music he did not like was bad. I think we all tend to pass that kind of judgment.

I remember a college teacher proclaiming to the class that the Beatles did not possess any musical talent. Her thing was opera, and therefore in her mind, talented musicians sang opera, and everybody who worked in other genres were talentless hacks, and if it wasn't the kind of music she preferred, it was bad.

We all know people who think "if it ain't country it ain't music." The same mentality can be found among fans of rock, jazz, and and every other form of music.

Attitudes die hard.

About the Shaggs: After much careful thought and listening I have come to the conclusion that the Shaggs are Good! Some music might be of tune and out of time but if what you are hearing is Real... that's Good. Some music might be in perfect tune, perfect time, perfectly punched-in, corrected and over-corrected, and be Bad.

We see that a lot around here. Some people love one genre of music and all other genres are bad. It's like saying All Bluegrass is bad. All Rock is bad. All country music is good.

But we agree that All steel guitar music is good... right? Wink Shocked

Taste, and APPEAL governs over any form of entertainment. Put the TV clicker in the hands of a teenager, then hand it to gramps. Watch as they fumble to select different programming. The music appreciation is by far the most difficult, when trying to match preferences, that trend in and out, with different age groups.

Of course we all agree that the Shaggs album is wonderful. But CURRENT? Only on the Steel Guitar Forum would an album recorded in 1969 be considered "current".

What about music that you only like "part" of?

You know, like most "modern country", where the song makes you want to blow chunks, but the steel playing is tremendous. I actually once bought a (this hurts to even type it) Tim Mcgraw cd because I liked the steel playing so much.

Maybe if old Tim would cover "My Pal Foot Foot"...

Yes, and his wife, Faith Hill, could cover "Philosophy of the World". Then they could team up for a power ballad rendition of "Why Do I Feel?" with Celine Dion singing a third part. Now that would be bad music! Wink Shocked
