Randy,

The Venom Wearin' Denim video is good. It's very campy/Kung Fu movie-ish. Not to mention that the bad girl is hot!!!

Wow, cool to see him playing Hung it Up! It looks like he's doing the thing with the muted triplets near the end of his steel solo differently than I thought. I'll have to give that a try, as it looks like a more practical (read: actually playable) way to get that sound...

-Travis

P.S. If you want to give the solo a try, but without the (highly rewarding and recommended) work of transcribing it: Hung it Up.<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Travis Bernhardt on 06 June 2006 at 11:22 PM.]</p></FONT>

Junior is amazing... One thing I noticed is that he leaves his finger picks on his middle and ring fingers, and then just uses a regular guitar pick between his index finger and thumb. This way he can switch back and forth between standard guitar and steel.

My biggest problem playing both on a song has been getting my picks on and off! I am going to try Juniors method.

Do any of you double on steel and standard guitar? How do you do it? I have played with no picks sometimes... but you know...

This may take some getting used to, but may be the best way to make the switch quickly enough.

Dom. I guess I missed his finger picks.
in my eyes it looks like he hybrid flatpicks;thumb and index on pick and middle finger picking. anyway, that's my style...good or bad.
I really like Brown. he tears it up. kind of like SRV swing style.

The picks are clearly visible in the first video. It's hard to catch them in the second, Dom

BTW, Junior is playing this Saturday at a street fair in Novato, CA at 5:00 PM. I believe it's free.

That's his wife pumping away on the big box acoustic, ACL stage left--probably mid-90's as I recall when they first started getting national exposure. So much energy!

I saw Junior last night here in Boise and man what a show! He was hot...and loud! It hurt everyone's ears at first and the sound guy said Junior wanted it loud. Junior does not use monitors so relies on the sound coming back at him to hear the rest of the band, I guess. He stands right in front of a Twin Reverb turned all the way up to 10. Ouch! How can his ears take it? Anyway, the sound guy just turned off the mike and his twin just filed the auditorium by itself. Amazing player!

Im a relatively new player - I started Dobro last September and got a lap steel a month ago (I'm also a total newbie to this forum this is my first post!)I have only tried G tuning on my 6 string lapsteel and dobro up until now. But last night, I really "got it" about what I'm guesing was C6 tuning on his 8 string. He just played an amazing number of notes with out having to move the bar all that much.

So to you experts out there: what tuning does he use? I certainly heard 6th chords but he did retune the top string (I think) down and then up for a couple songs. Of course he had 8 strings but I think a little adventurousness on my part for a more versitile tuning might be in order.

Mark. welcome to this amazing place.
Junior is wild and loud, to be sure.
Im not sure what his main tuning is, but I suspect its C6. I am a six string steeler so would not know what he's doing with that eight.

hang out...you'll get an answer soon.

Mark, don't miss out on what many fail to do and 'search' the archives.
If you think the SGF is hot now, check out what you've missed.

He uses C6, with a G on top and a Bb on the bottom.

C13. (C7add13 ... fwiw). b7, 1, 3, 5, 6/13, 1, 3, 5. Tom Morrell uses the 13th tuning allot, favoring E13. As do others; Not uncommon.

Twist the high 3 or 5 down to 9 for a 9th tuning, ...or a number of other twistin's up there for extensions or split tunings.

Jr. (or "anyone") can keep the bar within a few frets allot of the time because he is working in & around the mode / scale boxes ...particularly the extension voicings 2 frets down from the 6th/13th chord fret (the Dom7 / Mixolydian box), giving dominant7 voicings there and also on the 6th/13th chord fret with that b7 in the tuning; Noteable by studying his voicings in "Venom Wearing Denum" and "My Wife Thinks You're Dead"; And licks around the top-end of the Maj7 / Ionian box. But he didn't think in / about modes when I spoke with him a number of years back trying to pick his brain, ...and I assume he still doesn't although I'll bet he's quite aware of relative scales and chords in boxes.

Easy to say, but playing like he does a different matter (for me anyway) Image ..........

Aloha,
DT~

Thanks guys for the info. I am now inspired to find an 8 string steel and get on with it. Of course, inspiration to find/buy one is one thing and the 6 string that sits in the nextroom is ready for me to play. Great help and what a great site!

thanks
Mark
