Very Happy I noticed Buddy Emmons on the E9th neck lowers the 10th string a half step with the same knee lever that raises the 4th and 8th E's to F's. How is this 10th string lower used? What does it get, and where? Thanks

Seems like that would give you a maj7 with the A pedal and F lever combination.

I think that's a minor 7th chord with A/F.

According to his website, Buddy's Zum A pedal can be configured to only do string 5, not 10 (there is a quick-change doohickey).

So, with AF, here is the voicing (string number on the left and note on right):

5 Db
6 Ab
8 F
10 Bb

If you lowered your 9th string a half to C# that'd give you the root for the chord along with that lever, then that A# (Bb) would be a 6th wouldn't it? I have that lower by itself on the bottom of a knee lever which raises my 2nd string, I think I'll do some experimenting with it to see what I can find......JH in Va.

It would give a Bb7#9 chord on strings 10 9 6 5 if used together w the C pedal, getting the notes Bb D G# C# ( 1 3 b7 #9 )
You might be able to play it using thumb and 2 fingers but thumb & 3 fingers would be better IMO. It requries a grip that skips string 8 & 7 but it is just the same as playing 4note voicings on strings 6 5 2 1 (you have tried playing around with those voicings using different pedal/lever combinations?)

Bengt, I think Buddy has the lever that has this change on LKL, his F lever. It would be almost impossible to use that lever with the C pedal. That's why I was thinking it would be used with the A pedal.

I agree that the maj7 voicing w the natural 7 in the bass is quite useful. There is also the Dmaj7 voicing on strings 9 7 6 5 w A+B pedals where you can find Root -> 7th -> b7 on the low strings by using the F-lever mentioned. I like to explore all possible options even if some of them might be hard to play. Playing LKL and Cpedal is not be as easy as LKR and Cpedal but it is possible. The Bb voicing produced by the F-lever alone(or together w Bpedal) should be considered also, I think. On a major triad, If I raise the root note a half tone and at the same time lower the 5th a half tone as with the F lever I end up w a dominant b5 subst voicing as I see it.

I've been looking for a different Bb, and looking at the F lever at the same time.... Could be the BE lever is the solution to my problems both personal and scientific.
Thanks, Keith!

Thus fixated on the celestial doggy, I'm also looking at RKL as G3, Bb5, and D8 lowers.

I seem to have my levers switched....

Last I heard, Buddy had taken the 10th string raise off of his 1st pedal- another very cool idea from the maestro!

Bruce Zumsteg installed the 10th string change so it's optional. At the changer end you turn a nylon one way for engaged and the other for disengaged.

Along with the removable change, Buddy, (in his infinite wisdom,) added the 10th string B to C# change on a knee lever AND also can get the C# on the 9th string.

<i>Buddy never stops thinking about how to make the steel guitar better in one way or another...</i>

On my U12, I lower my 12 string B a whole step to A, and lower my other 2 B strings a half all with my RKL. With P1 and/or P2 down the lowest strings can sound pretty cool. I tried just lowering 12 string a half, but I didn't like it or use it much. It's just too low for that subtle of a change for me.
