Found this on YouTube...probably Frank's first TV appearance. Pretty funny stuff with comic genius Steve Allen kibitzing.

Had me grinning from ear to ear. Those old time shows are still very funny. Where is the comedy today?

With Mel Torme as the other musical guest. I bet it made for some interesting chat in the green room. The mind reels!

I just wish Frank Z. had left us his version of "Way to Survive."

Frank was a longtime admirer of Composer, Edgar Varses. To me, its interesting and poignant that what may be Frank’s first major public appearance, and one of his final efforts; Varese: The Rage and the Fury (an album of Edgar’s music FZ produced a few months before passing away) shows a lifelong interest in the experimental. Steve’s repartee is great - Frank’s easy going manner is great, and humor is the order of the day.

I had only seen stills of the show, never the footage. Thanks for posting.

"Frank Zappa... z-a-p-p-a, right?"

I've always wondered how he got his start.
Don't miss Part II.

My favorite was at the end of a Monkee's episode where Zappa is dressed as Mike Nesmith, who is dressed as Zappa and destroys a grand piano.

Tremendous!

I've been on my semi-annual Zappa kick, and this is making my day.

Youtube is a very cool thing.

He did. It's called "Truck Driver Divorce"; I think it's on "Them or Us".

if you haven't already, check out Sneaky Pete's solo on Frank's 'Waka/Jawaka' album. The song is "It Just Might Be A One-Shot Deal". It might just be Mr. Kleinow's finest performance.

Really enjoyed the Steve Allen clip. "Frank ZOPPA, ladies and gentlemen!" Steve was a hell of a musician too. He wrote "Gravy Waltz" which has been covered by Emmons and Jernigan among others.
