Hi folks,
So, for pickups, what pickup will give me the best low-end tone? Ideally, I would like this guitar to be fat, full, and chunky in the lows. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Cliff

Cliff you should try a Bill Lawrence 712 ...I have 710's on both of my Zum D10's and they are the perfect pickup for these guitars.

An L710 or L712 is a great pickup in a Zum....but it would be a brighter pickup than a 12-1, so maybe it's not for you...

PS since the 12-1 is a dark pickup already, you might want to experiment with different thumbpicks (material shape and stiffness) for beefier bottom.

My Zum came with a BL 912 pickup. I thought it was too dark, so, I installed a TrueTone pickup, wound at 19,500. The bottom was still solid, but, not muddy and the top end chimes like a bell.

Cliff...you might want to check the low end capabilities of your amp/speaker...most steel amps were made for the 10 string frequency range and don't carry the added lows of the 12 and 14 stringers very well.

Thanks for the good ideas, guys. My friend John has a few pups that we'll try out, but in the meantime I was curious how other people have done this. I know that much of this is subjective, anyway. I can see why peope love Zum, this guitar is so easy to play, so smooth. I may call Bruce or Jerry Wallace and see if they do any particular windings for what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Cliff

I agree with Ed. Real solid bass comes from the amp, not a pickup, and most all open-backed amps are pretty wimpy on the bottom end. You could get something with a closed back, maybe even a bass amp, and that would help tremendously. Or...if you have the back for it, you could get an old Super Twin Reverb, an amp that will give you almost any imaginable clean tone (and a lot that you can't even imagine). It makes every other open-back amp sound like a pocket transistor radio (with the possible exception of the Mesa Boogie III-C, with the 5-band EQ).

Yes, for sure a good closed back cab would make a difference. I play through a '68 Twin Reverb with two 12"s. My Emmons has great bass/bottom end through this amp. I guess I'm judging this relative to my Emmons.
