Topic: Tuning for a 10string steel no pedals |

| A friend of mine traded for an S-10 steel on a double frame with pad, but the steel has no pedals. It's tuned in E9th now, but I told him I thought perhaps a C6th or E13th tuning would be better since he wants to play western swing or Hank Williams type honky tonk music. I said I would go on the Forum and ask for some tips on tuning his guitar. It has ten strings and is a great looking well built guitar. Just no pedals. Any advice for my friend from you non-pedalers out there? Thanks |

| Michael,You'll get a lot of different ans.to this one,I like the C6th on a ten string.Bobbe has a great cd on nonpedal,with a lot of the old classics,I ask him what tuning he was using,he said the regular C6th as on a D-10. |

That sounds like the Tom Morrell story (sorry if I spelled his name wrong. I'm terrible at that). He went from E9 pedal to E13 ten string non pedal. Someone here is bound to know what he used. I think it was something like G#-E-C#-B-G#-F#-D-B-E and I'm missing a string somewhere. But that's real close. There may be another E between the F# and the D.
The other pedal player that I know of that has gone to doing alot of nonpedal playing recently is Maurice Anderson. He uses a 12 string tuning D-B-G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F-D. I don't know which ten of these he would recommend to a ten string player. The top two strings are chromatic strings tuned between 3 and 4 and 4 and 5 respectively. Both tunings are listed high to low. |

| I used to use an 8 string E6 with the same 2 chromatic strings as on the E9 pedal tuning on a 10 string non pedal. It really worked well for Western Swing and Honky Tonk. From top to bottom: F#, D#, G#, E, C#, B, G#, E, C#, B. You can also tune the lower C# up to a D and have an E13. I currently use a B6, because I play a U12 Pedal steel. |

I use E 13th: l-h E B D E F# G# B C# E G#, sometimes I tune the D down to C# for some tunes.
(This is also what I use on my Emmons in a pedal version)
