I have a better than average knowledge of Sho~Bud history but I have run across something that seems odd. I have been looking at a Bud S-10.... square front, wide pedals, gumby headstock, double raise single lower changer, nylon tuners, 2 hole pullers, 3 screw pickup, original finish, does not have a Pro I decal... just the Sho~Bud under the lacquer. I figure it for 75, maybe 76.

The thing is that it has the slot in the finger for the string rather than the pin. I always thought that the slotted fingers were chromed pot metal, which I don't expect to see on a Bud of this vintage...

Does anyone know if there were ever any slotted aluminum fingers?

Mike,

Mine is a similar model with the slotted fingers, a '76 with double raise and double lower. Besides that, it's exactly like your description. So it's probably a little bit younger than your guitar. I've been told by a reliable source that if the changer fingers have slots, it's pot metal. My undercarriage is certainly pre-Super Pro, as is everything else, so go figure.

They must have started making the pot metal changers first, before they started on the undercarriages. The guitar still sounds REALLY freakin' good, so the changer could be made with recycled tin cans and I wouldn't care.....although I must admit that I prefer the brass swivels and two-hole pullers over the later pot metal 4-hole pullers and hex shafts. I've owned both, and my current Pro 1 undercarriage moves a lot smoother, in my opinion.

I had a Pro III Custum exactly the same: square front, teardrop knee levers, double raise, single lower and slotted fingers.

Thanks guys,

Chris, I expect to see pot metal on the double/double changers...I had a double/single LDG that had the pins rather than the slots, so I thought that they were all that way. The axe sounds good.... and plays well. I have 2 first year LDG's so the competition is stiff....

Bob& Marco, I guess it looks like this is the norm for these guitars... thanks.

Bob, I talked to Phil the other day, and he is thrilled with the `Bud.

I have two identical Crossovers, but one has the pins and the other the slots. One of the pins broke and it was a devil of a job to remove the finger and replace it. You can't replace the pins, you have to replace the entire finger. The slots are a much better design.
