Please help ID this Fender Lap Steel

Post by David Trabue »

I have a Fender 6 string that looks just like the 8 string that is posted on Brads Page of Steel & called a Deluxe. When I looked online & on EBay to try to get an idea of sale prices the ones that were called Deluxe seemed to have a different pickup arrangement. I'm just wanting to confirm what I have and hopefully then be able to appraise it a little better.
Thanks for any help!

That's a Fender Deluxe 6 from around 1956, based on the trapezoid style pickup and the script logo. In 1957 this model changed to have the double pickup setup similar to the Stringmaster double neck guitars.

I can't tell from the photo, but it may have been refinished white. The ones I've seen have either a blond or walnut finish.

Thanks Brad! Great info to know. I think it's original color, just a bad camera shot. It's more blonde than stark white. It came in the tweed case, which unfortunately had sustained some water damage on one side (case, not guitar).

Any idea what these are worth?

Thanks againg,
Dave

If I had to guess, I would say probably in the range of $500-800.00 USD. I'm sure others would have different ideas of the value.
The six string model is relatively rare, but not as sought after as the eight string model. I like the trapezoid pickup myself, but some players prefer the under string pickups because they allow you to play nearer to the bridge.

That is a very nice steel. As Brad stated, the Trap is a great pickup.
