Just obtained a Carter D 10 and decided I should put new strings on the E9th. I have 6 sets of George L's and i'd like to use them up. I notice that the 6th string on it now is wound and the George L is a plain.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don----first of all, you should really base the decision on which it is that you prefer. There's a pretty big difference in sound & feel of the wound vs. unwound. I've been through both, going from unwound to wound, back to unwound and now I'm with wound and I think I'll be staying there.
If you have never used a wound 6, I'd suggest staying with it for a while for two reasons---it's a good opportunity to see if you like it (a huge benefit is the tuning stability and resistance to cabinet drop) and because if you change to the unwound you will need to make significant changes to the length of the pull, quite possibly needing to re-rod the change. Might as well see if you don't prefer the wound string and save yourself the hassle.
My experience with this is both with my Carter and with my Fessenden.

I've been using a .020P for my #6 G# for years. I switch between George L, GHS & Frenchys Steel Mill strings also. The only string I have to reset is usually the 10th, B. I've just had good luck on all of my Carters(7 total) with a .020P. I ran into problems several years ago on a LDG trying to get the #6 G# to tune true with a .022W. That's when I switched. With a Carter, I imagine either string, wound or unwound wouldn't be a problem. Same with a Fessy, probably. Both are excellent guitars.

I just got a new carter s-10 and it came with a .022 plain for the six string. In fact in the Carter owners manual the string chart says to use a .022 plain for the sixth. I used to use a .020 with my Zum and was a bit concerned about using .022. But I bought some single jagwires plain .022 and put them on my carter and they stay in tune and have a real rich tone! I got lots of spare .020's now. There must be a reason why Carter listed the .022 in their string chart!

To me, the only reason for a plain 6th is to get a full step lower from G#. I have that, but prefer the sound of a wound 6th.
I have to have a compensator on that string; with a wound, I wouldn't.
