I returned from Hawaii after two weeks of steel guitar and traditional Hawaiian music.
Had the opportunity to play with the "Fort Street' gang, a few times along with my pal Derrick Mau. They get together on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM to around 1:30 PM
I brought my old frypan again this year, because it is lighter than the bakelite, which I'm more comfortable with.
Bobby Ingano plays on Sunday evenings with a traditional Hawiian band, which includes George Kuo,Martin Pahinui (son of Gabby) and Aaron Mahi, who is the former director of th Royal Hawaiian Band.
During the break on Sunday, Bobby pulled out an electric mandolin and wowed the crowed with Italian tunes, including the theme from "Godfather"
He was using his 8 string bakelite, with the bottom string removed (he likes seven)for the sessions.
That band was the best music in Waikiki while I was there, and plays at the Marriot Waikiki Hotel near the beach.
If Bobby Ingano makes it to one of the steel conventions this year, he will likely bring his mandolin!! |
