The HSGA Joliet Convention (Oct 12-14, 2006). is looking better all the time. We're excited about our guest of honor, Dick Sanft, and look forward to meeting and hearing him.

The latest news is that Jody Carver will be attending, and if that wasn't enough, he will be playing the Jerry Byrd Fender Steel Guitar.

In addition to performing onstage, Jody will be conducting a Thursday night 'Talk Story'. He'll talk about his life, his career and the musicians and stars that he's known and played with. The Jerry Byrd Guitar will also be there on-stage with him to demonstrate and discuss.

Here's more... HowardR has graciously offered to set up the JB Fender guitar in 'The Dustroom' during select hours of the weekend for all to see and demo. Thank you Howard!

Who knows... maybe Dick Sanft and Jody Carver could play a tune or two together at a jam session. It goes without saying, they can both swing.

So far, this is shaping up to be a stellar convention!

Oh yes, all of the usual suspects will be there as well.

This is a wonderful turnout of events.

To Jerry Byrd, a guitar was a tool and from what I have read, he never made a big deal about them. That's why I feel that it should be exposed to people and not end up as a museum piece behind a showcase, on a wall, or under a bed.

Now granted, it is a very special guitar, and it's a piece of living history. But what better way to honor Jerry Byrd than to have it at a Hawaiian Steel Guitar Convention BEING PLAYED?

What a great tribute to all the fathers of the steel guitar to have Jody play it for us at the HSGC.

This worked out very well at the PSGA show, and it appears that history is going to repeat itself. Glad to be a part of this.

How Cool! I can't wait for it. I just got through talking with Jody and it's going to be a lot of fun. But of course, those Joliet conventions are always lots of fun!

Wow, this is going to be an incredible year for the HSGA Joliet convention! Jody as we all know is an incredible player and source of knowledge and from what I've heard Dick Sanft is a living master of the Hawaiian steel guitar.

Thanks Rick, I couldn't even tell it was C#m7 just listening to it, hadn't tried to record copy it yet. He was hanging out with Bud Tutmarc when he turned to the gospel full time I think. So I guess he was using:

E
C#
G#

Actually he turned to evangelism several years before meeting Bud's dad, Paul, in the early 40's.

Hidden amoungst these religious recordings ... are some seriously cool marches (two or three of which made it onto some Bob Brozman compilations of Hoopii ) ...

And jewels like this Kuu Ipo/Sweet Lelani Medley and this song ...

Indian Love Call

... which "literally" changed the way I though about & played the steel guitar ...

I first saw these tapes advertised in the HSGA Quarterly... and snapped them right up ...

Now they are on CD ...

Marc Recods - Sol Hoopii 1

Marc Records - Sol Hoopii 2

Disclaimer: Most of these lyrics are "very religious" ... and the last few songs were recorded when Sol was blind ... literally weeks before his death ...

They are heart wrenching ...

Al, I have good news for you. Joliet is only a little over 200 miles. Avoid the afternoon traffic from 4-6 p.m. near Gary and Chicago (as you probably know).

I have much of Sol's recordings. He wrote many Christian lyrics to the traditional songs of Hawaii to put into words the feelings of his heart and then he toured many churches in the U.S. to give expression to it.

These recordings are all very deeply moving because he puts his heart into his singing as well as his playing. The songs are even more moving when you hear his personal testimony behind them.

Aloha,
Don
