Two of my cousins have had both knees replaced and one of them twice. They were postmen and just wore them out. They say recovery is very painful and if you don't follow the doctor's orders on exercising them it can cause a fatal blood clot.
All that cheerful stuff aside, one of these guys plays golf almost every day and walks his dog a mile or two, so after the pain the outcome can be pleasant. Billy |

Skip, I have had BOTH KNEE JOINTS replaced. The left one in 2002 and the Right one in 2004. If you need to have your Knee Joints replaced to aleviate the pain as I did, I advise you to go ahead and have it done. The therapy afterward is no cakewalk to be sure, but it is necessary for you to get the full use of your knee joints afterward. I had some pain, but nothing I couldn't cope with using prescribed pain medication.
I was back to "normal" in about 3-4 months and have not had any problems at all.
If you are otherwise in good health you should have no problems. |

Thanks for the replies guys, both my knees have been a pain for 3 over years, gettin time to rebuild. I really don't need to be outa work for an extended period of time , but i would like to do away with the pain and limitations. Guess 62 years with over 30 of it at UPS , it's time something was fixed. Everything else works OK. |

Skip, I just had my second hip replacement two weeks ago. Knee rehab is more difficult than for hips. Get as strong as you can before the surgery, both upper and lower body. An eliptical machine can work even for people with bad legs. After the surgery take as little pain meds as you can get by with - minimizes side effects and gets you off of them sooner. Elevate your legs alot to keep the swelling down. Also stretch your feet a lot. The rehab can be tough, but you get a little better every day until you return to normal. Good luck. |

Skip, keep us posted as to the progress & stuff....everybody has been encouraging with this. I too should have it done; my Dr says when I get tired of having the knee shots, or they don't work much anymore, then I could get my knees done any time now.... |

My wife had both done at the same time 8 years ago. While she is not perfect today (who is?)- at least she can walk, play golf, etc. The reason that we/she had them both done at the same time was that everyone we spoke to said that they are glad they had it done but were hesitant on going through it again. What I learned from her ordeal was to request a pain consult- different from the dept of anesthesia and different from the dept of surgery. Get it handled before-hand and get them on your team- you do have to request it~. My cousin who is a specialist in pain research, when asked to give a concise answer to the question in 5 words or less- "Tell me everything I need to know about pain control" replied "Don't let it start". Otherwise you spend most of the time chasing it and it is much more difficult to stop once it's started- so get it handled properly before and your post-op will be mucho better~~~ |

Skip,I like you had worn my knees out by climbimg poles for 32 years. The pain was so intense I really did not care to do anything but set.Sometimes they would even lock-up.
Do yourself a big favor and have them replaced!!
The recovery time on the first one was about 4 months. I tried to baby it instead of aggessively working it. Had to go back in and have the scar tissue broke loose. Ouch!!
The second one was a peace of cake! I could have gone bowling 1 month out!
I seriously would not have them both done at the same time.
As far as playing the steel guitar I am sure I can play better now than before because of not having the continual pain! Please advise us how you get along. _________________ The Lone Prairie Steeler Pat |

Skip, Ask your Doctor about, SYNVISC. I have had knee problems for years, sometimes when I would stand the knees would lock or go out from under me and I would say hi, to the floor. Walking was always an adventure, not knowing if I was going to stumble, fall or make it where I was going.
My Orthopedic surgeon, was going to do the replacements but tried SYNVISC first. Three shots behind the knee cap, one each week for three weeks. Surgery has been postponed. This product hasn't been out very long but the reports from patients is good.
You will need an orthoscopic clean out first.
First time in years my knees haven't hurt. I'm on them standing about ten hours a day in the workshop and no pain. My Doc, says this will put off having to have replacement surgery for at least another six to eight years.
I have some friends who have had replacements, one two years ago and is still not recovered fully. So, if you have the replacements do like the guys have said, grit your teeth and do the therapy religiously. |

All the above advice sounds very helpful, whether for your left knee or right. Just be verrrrrrrrry careful if they start talking about doing something with your 'vertical knee'... |

I appreciate all the info and comments you all have made concerning my post. The doc told me that i could try the shot series and see if they helped , instead of having surgery right away. I totlally agree , so now i'm waiting patiently (pun intended) for my health care provider to approve the treatment. Haven't heard yet but it's only been 5 days since the inquiry. Hope the approval comes through soon , my wife has offered to duct tape my knees as the other alternative. I had told her that it would fix anything.
Moderator , your can shut this un , thank you.
God bless you all,

I have had both replaced, best thing I ever did. Caution!! have one done at a time, you'll be glad you did. My advice from my experience, do your therapy at home with a CPM machine prescribed by your doctor. This is if you have someone there to assist you. I was doing (3) hours a day at home (early morning, noon, evening) and was fully rehab'd in 3 weeks with each knee and back to work. Out patient therapy is usually about 3-5 hours a week versus 3 hours a day my way....makes a huge difference in recovery time. The CPM is (Controlled Passive Motion) machine you probably will be using in the hospital for a few days. Take your pain RX an hour before working out and push it a little further each day. Some days you won't be able to go any further than day before but most days you can go just a tad further. Good Luck! If I can offer more info please email me.
