I bought a second-hand (12th hand?) E9 Dekley about 1 1/2 years ago that I've enjoyed overall. However, I'm still a rookie when working under the hood and feel like I'm missing some crucial piece of info on how to tune pedals and knee levers.
My fourth string bend with my left inside knee lever (2nd?)I can't dial in since I tuned my third (C?) pedal that also manipulates the fourth sting. The knee lever stays very sharp - not lowering enough to hit the D# from the E.
Any suggestions? |

Jeffery,
My first hunch is that there is not enough slack in the pull on the C pedal, the knee lever, or both: you have tuned the string itself at the endplate by tightening one of the nylon hex screws too far. I would check both of the pullrods that are raising the 4th string and check that there is at least a little bit of slack. This is about the only thing I experienced that could mess with the tuning on the Dekley I had. You may also need to allow for a little more travel on the knee lever by adjusting the collars on the side:

A good way to start is to just loosen the offending pullrod ballcrank bushing setscrews enough to let the pullrods "relax", and allow for just a tiny bit of backlash. Then, adjust your tuning nuts as required.
Timing is everything... |

Dan,
Thanks for the tip. If I loosen the pullrod to give a bit more play at the nylon end, won't that take my C pedal out of tune? How do I find the happy middle here? Do I loosen it a bunch, then work backwards?
These questions are probably steel-101, but I thank you and anyone else for taking the time.

Ray, thanks for the info too.
Upon further inspection, it looks like both my C pedal and A knee lever rods to the fourth string assembly don't have enough play at the end, thus the middle knee lever isn't dropping far enough down.
So what do I loosen and tune first? Do I loosen both suspect rods at the hex nut a handful of turns, then get the B knee lever in tune before going back to the others? Is there a step-by-step? Or a don't-do-this-whatever-you do!!! .
Thanks.
