Topic: Which top recording pros are using a vintage steel? |

If we define a top recording pro player as one who makes his living and is heard regularly on major label recordings, I can only think of two or three players who play a vintage steel as their main instrument. I can think of Lloyd Green (Sho-Bud LDG), Jay Dee Maness (Emmons P/P) Dan Dugmore (Sho-Bud) Lloyd Maines (Sho-Bud). I think that Steve Hinson might be currently playing a Show-Pro which would be a modern model. Also, Lloyd may be using his Show-Pro as well.
I would define a vintage steel as an Emmons P/P, a Sho-Bud, a ZB Custom, a Marlen, or an early MSA such as a Classic. Some may say that to be vintage it must be of a minimum age. I am more interested in steels that are from the 60's and 70's era.
I realize that there are greats and Hall of Fame players who play vintage models, but for this question, I will ask that we include top recording pros in this list. Who am I missing? Please feel free to correct any that I have listed above.

| Charles, you are correct. in fact alot of these so. Tx guys use old Emmons p/p or wraparounds. Jim Loessberg (who also uses a killer old Sho-bud permanent), Dicky Overbey, Rick Price, Bobby Flores, Marty Muse.... Randy's is definitely a special horn. all beat to heck, back legs sticking off in different directions, JB weld all over the bottom! but , MAN what tone it has. ofcourse, Randy could play a toaster with rubber bands and make it sound great!! Herb Steiner is another great player who has a penchant for old guitars. |

I believe Dave Easley gigs with an old Emmons push-pull or a Marlen. I've heard that Ron Wood from the Rolling Stones (does he count?) tours with an old Emmons push-pull.
When I saw Ricky Davis with Dale Watson he was playing an old Sho-Bud Professional. |

When I went to see my old pal Dave Easley play a couple months ago, he reminded me that he is playing the same rosewood push/pull I sold him almost 30 years ago! Although when I sold it to him, it didn't have a rope to wrap around his left leg to raise the 6th string on the back neck.

TC...I used a push-pull Emmons on"Your Man"...I used an Emmons LeGrande on some of the other cuts on that record...I didn't have the ShowPro yet when we did that album(2003 maybe?)...thanks for the kind words...I was just going after that"Curly Shuffle"sound!Remember that hotel gig we did in Chicago about 25 years ago?Take care-Steve
