Has anyone ever though of building 2 smaller cases instead of one? Perhaps you could place the steel body in one case and the pedal assembly, rods and legs in the other. It would split up the weight, perhaps make it easier to carry. I know that most cases are made of wood, which certainly adds to the overall weight. 2 cases might open up some possibilites of making the cases out of other types of material. For those of you who tour, would 2 lighter cases be easier, less restrictive and costly to take on a commercial airlines? Just a thought. Any great ideas out there? |

You will see pictures of the split cases that I build there and some testimonials. I build them with wheels on the body cases for easy transport. The cases take an average of 15-20 pounds off the total carry weight by splitting the cases. The wheels make transporting a breeze. Great for the older guitars that are heavier. When Gary Morse was in town here he had two cases. Bothe "anvil types".
Recently I looked around and found that a 62key SKB keyboard case would be about perfect for most PSGs if you had one of the above pedal cases, and about a third of the "normal" price.

Thats interesting. I recently got two customers who bought those flimsy SKB cases and were sorely disappointed. The guitar flops around and is largely unprotected from inside damage. |

Maybe they forgot to add the foam and blocking and just threw it into the case empty? I have an SKB-style Wheel-EZE case that Sierra prepared for me with excellent custom-blocking that protects the guitar very well indeed, and I fly all over the country with it.
Having said that, I would still be interested in getting the weight down further so that my steel fits under the 50 lb flight limit (right now it's 54 lbs, without the legs and rods.) So, a second case would help me only if it were 4 lbs lighter than my Wheel-EZE case. (Kevin, do you think that's possible?) The other issue is that I also have to have a suitcase to carry my clothes, CDs, and accessories in, so the leg case would have to be large enough to double as my suitcase, or else I'd end up with 3 bags to check, in which case I'll get stuck paying extra anyway! |
