A friend gave me an unfinished squareneck guitar that I plan on turning into a 7 string. The body (solid walnut) is pretty much built, but there's no soundwell, baffles, sound posts, etc. There's a place between the hole for the cone and the screen holes that looks like it was meant to have a curved baffle put in. The top seems plenty strong without any additional bracing. So my question is: What are the advantages/disadvantages to the traditional soundwell, sound posts, baffles, or just leaving it open?
Also, since this is going to be a 7 string, what's the best way to do the bridge insert(s)? Tradionally, there's 2 inserts and a space in the middle to adjust the cone/spider tension. I'd like the middle string to be right in the middle, but I'll have to have a 1 piece insert. Any ideas? Thanks.

John, The difference between a soundwell and sound posts and/or baffles is a matter of preference. A new reso player probably couldn't tell the difference in sound or volume. You need either a soundwell or soundposts to support the cone. Otherwise your top will sag in sooner or later. You can get an offset spider with the screw hole outside the bridge slot, and use a one piece insert. Just remember that the 12th fret has to be halfway between the nut and the bridge and the offset is a quarter inch off center. SmileSmile Billy
