| Hi, I'm planning to raise the nut on an old [ 1930's ] SS Stewart F hole maple bodied guitar for another Family member to start out on accoustic lap steel. What would be a good string set, [ or guages ] for a G "Dobro" tuning that wouldn't put too much stress on this old guitar? Thanks, George |

If you're using high G or bluegrass tuning:
1. D
2. B
3. G
4. D
5. B
6. G
I'd stay around regular string gauge sets (.011 to .054) at the most. You might be better off using low G:

3. G
4. D
5. G
6. D

| The only comment I would have is, from my playing point of view, the lighter string gauges on the 1st string result in the string being too bendy. From the old days of heavy Black Diamond strings, I'm a heavy-handed player, and while the neck on the F-hole instrument probably isn't wide, there have been times when my tilted bar hits the end of the fret on the first string. I understand where you're coming from with the concern for the total stress on the instrument. Geo |
