I just got a note from Jack Hamlett and I thought I'd pass it along:
"I thought I would update you on how the steel guitar history book is going. I am currently in the editing and proofreading stage which I hope to finish by the end of February. Currently, the text is 344 pages long with biographies of approximately 60 steel players."
Also...
"... my family owns the original Bud Isaacs Bigsby. This was the one Bud used to create the modern pedal steel sound on hit records like "Slowly." It is a double neck 8-string with 2 pedals.
We are considering selling it. Along with the guitar is the original case with a cover Bud had made for it circa 1950's. Also, we have the original bill of sale as well as other documents including letters from Paul Bigsby. If you know of anyone who would be interested in this steel, I would deeply appreciate you giving them our email address and phone number: JVJHamlett@aol.com

Let me sell a Kidney & a few other things & I'll be right over with the cash!!!
Seriously though, I think Bobbe would be the prime candidate for purchasing this rare piece. It would be "The Crown Jewel".
I wonder what it will end up going for...any guesses???

That was the guitar that started it all for moving harmony pedal steel.
It seems a shame for it not to be in a museum.
It would seem to be worthy of a donation campaign among
Forum members and other steelers and fans to purchase it for
the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame.
I'm not in a position to coordinate such a campaign,
but would certainly contribute to it. |

|
|
This is the guitar that did it all, the beginning of the E9th, this started "The era of steel guitar" that we all are the most familiar with today. This is one of two D-8 Bigsbys that were on all of the first "pedal records" Slowly was this guitar, and the following string of Webb Pierce's hits was also a D-8 Bigsby, "More and More", "Wanderin' Wanderin", In the Jail House Now", and many more number ones. But the first guitar that set this style up as a perminent style for all commercial/professional steel players was this very steel.
Soon to follow Bud Isaacs and Sonny Burnett in this style was Walter Hains, Buddy Emmons, Johnny Siebert(later), and Lloyd Green. Then everybody that wanted to make big money. (Big money?)
Anyway, this guitar is the most significant steel guitar for developing a new style in history. It's value? whew, I only hope the guitar has a very safe future where in can be enjoyed by the multitudes like it was when it was new. It sure did twist a lot of steel guitar minds in the beginning.

Jim, I think you know I'd make an offer, as a matter of fact, I already have, but to no avail, guess I'd better sell the other airplane too.
Yea, I wish, but I'm not worthy.
Why don't you? I know you can afford it!
