Out of all the people on the planet, you folks know just how I feel right about now. I left the LA area Wed. night at about midnight, and drove 1500+ miles to see Gary Carpenter, in Ft. Worth, Texas, and pick up my new horn. I got back Sat. night. This steel is awesome! You can't really see the grain of the wood in the pics. but Mark Giles did a fine job of allowing the grain to shine through a high gloss black finish. And the inlay looks so sweet. Thanks Mark. And to Gary and James Carpenter, It was great to meet you, and your steel guitars are fantastic. Thank You ! ( Gary, I listened to your CD on the way back, and it was great ! )

Manfred, I call it my play pedal. Right now it raises my
6th, G#, up to B. My vertical, and pedal 4, split the PF change.

John, Nice! Very nice. Is the fretboard a custom or did Rains desgin a new fretboard? The reason I ask is all the ones I've seen were the rain drop ones. J.C. |

Hey John...I was at Gary's last week and when I saw your Rains, I just fell in love with it! I begged Gary to leave the door open so I could steal it! It has to be one of the most incredible steel guitars ever made!!
The fret board on John's new Rains is actually the contemporay "Dove" design we use mainly for our Gospel model, 'The Spirit'. What a great new Rains!

This is one nice guitar folk's! J.W was kind enough to let me play his new guitar this evening and I was very impressed with the action and sound.
I have never had the chance to play a Rains before and it lived up to all the good things I have read about them here on the Forum. The finish work by Mark Giles is outstanding.

Hi John,
thanks. I always wonder if a single neck has more than 4 pedals.
To finish up my questionary: what do you have on RKL II??
Thanks again!!

Hello Manfred, my inside RKL is new for me, but not a new change for some. It lowers the Bs, to Bb. the front RKL, I like alot. It raises the F#s to G#. I play the Day set-up, and the rest of the changes are pretty much standard. Pedal 5 is pretty wild, but like I said, it's a play pedal, where I can try different moves without loosing anything. I'm simply amazed at the color of this guitar. I wanted a black, high gloss finish, but with some character to the curly maple showing through. What that did to the color, is to give it a very deep LDG green look to it. And I love LDG green. Yet, it is a black guitar. I think this horn has some mojo.
Thanks, J. W. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/johnmwalden

Hi JW, Having 5 floor pedals on the SD-10 is a great Idea..the pedal rack being there, I often wondered why people would limit themselves to 3 pedals...just because a guy doesn't want two necks doesn't mean he can't have more than 3 floors...there's always another idea for a change so why not have the means to do it when the idea springs to mind...Great looking Steel.

I've been playing my new steel for a week or so, and I have to say that the Rains feels as good as it looks. The pedals are smooth and easy, and the tone is great ! If anyone is considering a new guitar, check out the Rains !

Hello Brad, before I got "Rained on", all I knew was the sound my Emmons LeGrand III, D-10. My Emmons has a anti detune devise on the E-9. This makes the pedals pretty stiff. I am considering removing it. I don't play C-6
yet, but when I master the E-9 to some degree, I will start. I've only been playing 4 years. I'm a 6 string crossover. But to answer your question, yes. Playability is so much easier, and the tone is similar to the Emmons. When you play through devises, like a BB, a profex II, and a compressor, you tweek your tonality. But a side by side comparison, the Rains wins, hands down.
Thanks for asking. J. W. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/johnmwalden

Glad to hear you like your new Rains. All you need to make great music is a Good Steel, a good VP and a good amp..(I like the Peavey Nashville 112) and of course good hands...now with all the mechanics out of the way you can concentrate on the music...you'll probably spend much less time with that 6 stringer. |

Wow!!!! Now that is a nice Rains! Is that a one of a kind? I have seen dozens of Rains guitars but never like that one. I bet with wood necks that thing sounds very warm and sweet. My Rains is kinda unique, it's the only wineberry mica Rains built so far to my knowlege.
Nice Steel! Hope you enjoy it!

Posted 6 Feb 2007 12:49 pm Well John, I got Rain's on yesterday
|
|
I was a little bumbed out over the weekend; my guitar didn't deliver on Friday, or Saturday. I couldn't pick it up at the UPS depot either. Well, Monday rolls around, busy at work, no call from the wife telling me my guitar had delivered. Starting to think, my first bad UPS experience with my new guitar.
Walk in the door, my 11 year old daughter says, "hey Dad, I just brought something in the den for you...I bet you'll be excited". Yep, it arrived unscathed!
Pecan, wood grain texture, satin mica, Spirit model, pearl inlay on front AND rear apron, highly polished. Looks real good!!!
Now, it has probably the best overall action of any steel guitar I've played. Smoother than fresh churned butter. We had Jerry Wallace wind some pickups to my spec'd resistance and baby let me tell you what...to quote Gary Carpenter,"man, this guitar has got sustain out the ying-yang; you know what that means, it's got sustain out the ying yang!" I went heavy on the windings and man-0-man...this is the best sounding steel I've heard. I would love to hear a great set of hands on this guitar.
Well, all those "rumors", weren't rumors. This guitar is everything and more than what I expected. I have considered a Rains guitar since Dallas of '04. That was the year that Paul & Hal wore it out at the Rains booth for a good 1.5-2 hrs. I must say I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger!
Great looking guitar John! |

Congrats' Tim ! Post a pic. for us. Did Mark Giles do the pearl ? There's something about ordering a new horn to your specs. Color, inlay, pedals, KLs, everything YOU would like to have. And when it happens.....
Now, if a wife could be ordered like that.
