Does anybody have a comprehensive list of recording that f Jim Murphy played on as a sideman? I have six or seven things that feature him and would like more.
Also which Carl Smith and Hank Thompson albums does he play on? |

Try and find his performance on The Conan O'Brian Show, where he backed up Hank 3 on a Epi 'Rocco'. Killer!
And if you find it, let me know! |

I don't remember which CD he's on but I believe Jim backed up Mike Siler on one of his CD's. Check out Bobby Flores website, I think you might find it there. |

Hey Chad,
Cracker Barrel has a great Asleep at the Wheel CD with Jim Murphy. It was recorded for the chain and has some great steel solos and licks........See you in March.......Bill |

About '69 or '70 Carl Smith did a double album. Curly Chalker played behind some of the songs and Murph played steel on the rest along with the sax. A truly great recording treasure. |

The Carl Smith album is called, Carl Smith Anniversary 20 years of Hits , This is such a good albumn it has lots of Chalker, but it also has lot of Big Jim, togather they made some good music. It has 20 songs which I guess would have been called a double albumn.

Chad,
I assume you have his instrumentals entitled "Big Murph" and "My Mothers Eyes". They are pretty incredible! Not too long ago he was also featured on a steel/dobro album done by Terry Miller (name???). Some of his best stuff is on Johnny Paycheck's albums, Live In New York City and Everybody's Got A family. He's also featured on Asleep At The Wheel's live DVD (the one filmed in Texas, not the German one).

He is the only pedal player that I have heard with Asleep at the Wheel. On the "Live at Billy Bob's" CD he does an excellent solo on Before the Next Teardrop Falls". Does anybody here know what guitar and amp he was using? Nice crisp Fender-y sound (amp).

Of course you're right, Craig! ...that's the drawback of having a register sorted by surname. Didn't really like the CD anyway, too schmaltzy for my taste. |

Per I agree with you. The stuff with Buddy was better and not because of the steel player. It just had a littlle more country sound to it. |

Okay, thanks for the tips. I have a Jason Roberts CD, a Vassar Clements album called Superbow and the Earl Scruggs Revue Austin City Limits album with Murph, too. Anything else? |

Tom
I saw Jim with AATW the last summer(I think) that he toured with them. He was using a very beat up looking Fender steel, tall, he played standing up. The guitar had only one or two pedals and he used them very little. The piano player was absent, sister's wedding or something, which gave Jim even more opportunity to play. He was great. |
