I've always wondered what Ralph Mooney's 8 string tuning was. The 10 string version is available, but I'm curious what he added when he went from 8 to 10 strings. I would guess the 2 lowest strings, as I think he had the high G# in the late 50's. Can't figure out what the low Bb is doing in there, though I've listened to lots and lots of Ralph Mooney....Jerry

The Bb string is used as a palm rest when the fiddle is playing.

The low Bb in Ralph's tuning can be used a couple of ways. If you've got a lever to lower the 10th string or just tune it to Bb and try this. For a dom7 change in the key of A go to the 3rd fret and play strings 6, 8, & 10. Or if you're in A and going from a D (IV) to an E (V) go to the 10th fret and play strings 5, 6, & 8, then to make the E7 change just play strings 6, 8, & 10 with the 10th string lowered a half while still at the 10th fret.........JH in Va.

In 1960, Ralph used an 8 string, E9 tuning. The first string was G#. There was no Bb in his tuning at that time.
-----------------------------
pedal 1: raise 4th string 1 fret.
pedal 2: raise 4th string 1 fret and 3rd string 2 frets.
pedal 3: raise 3rd string 2 frets and 1st string 1 fret.
pedal 4: raise 2nd string 2 frets.
-----------------------------
This is the setup as I remember it. It has been a long time since I used that setup, so I could be wrong. It is accurate to the best of my knowledge.
I worked with Ralph and occasionally played his Fender 1000 from 1960 to 1962. I had a Fender 400 setup identical to Ralphs setup.
I was told that sometime after 1962, Ralph changed his Fender 1000 setup to pull only one string with each pedal. I have not asked him about that.
Go to this page on my website and you can hear a recording I played on during that time period, while using that setup. There is also a brief description. Listen to Norm Owens' "Lately".
