Here is my foolish question for the month;
I got a Sierra 8 string lap steel and I want to get a different pickup for it. The one that is in it is a George L. Is it a wide-mount? I wantto get either a Bill Lawrence or a Truetone but I need to know what I am looking for when I see ads for pickups. I assume that it is a wide-mount pickup that is in it, am I wrong? |

as you are hinting at lap steel string spacing is a bit wider than standard guitars.
I would image an eight pole pickup should be specific to steel guitars and not regular electric guitars. so , then, the pole pieces should be wide enough.
myguess only. |

Question: If this is the Sierra #003 that you just bought on the Forum, and you said this about it: "It is the nicest playing and sounding lap steel I have ever laid my hands on."
And bOb said this about his Sierra:
I have #002, and it's the best sounding steel guitar I've ever played.
If this steel sounds so d*^%)! GOOD, why would you want to change the pickup? I assume it still has the original pickup. Inquiring minds want to know.... |

Easy. The first one I had was #004 by the way. It had a True Tone in it and was just about perfect for me.
These laps were made by a PSG company and have very PSG charactersitics. I am just tweaking the tone a bit, going for a more vintage vibe. It tends to be a bit trebly without some serious adjusting.
That being said, It's still the best one I have played. |
